On the night of New Year’s Eve and the following days in January, the Capitol Musical Theatre’s Big Stage hosted a gala focusing on musical duets, which could be described as the „Carnival Version of Musical Duets“. The theatre prepared an evening full of emotion, music and unforgettable moments full of the joy of being together and the humorous way in which the gala was held. I was looking forward with particular anticipation to the duet „Tonight“ from West Side Story, not least because of the recent release of the film „Maestro“ about the composer of that musical. The artists conveyed the atmosphere, and the orchestra created the right mood with an instrumental version of „Maria“ – as befits a duet gala – played before the duet.

The opening of the gala was like a journey through the world of the musical, where the most exciting moments were shown in duets. Heroes from different eras and musical styles stood together on stage, igniting feelings and evoking a storm of emotion and applause. In each other’s company, it is easier to throw oneself into play or convince others of one’s reasons, and this was the atmosphere at this special event.

All the songs were sung as duets, which gave the gala an unusual feel. Accompanied by an orchestra of more than 20 musicians, the Capitol Musical Theatre artists took the audience on a musical journey, presenting songs from the world’s greatest musicals, such as „West Side Story,“ „Grease,“ „Rent,“ „Mamma Mia!“ and ‚La La Land‘.

In addition, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the new Capitol building, the audience had the opportunity to reminisce about beloved duets from repertory shows that are no longer being performed on stage. Songs from hits such as „History of Sin“, „The Threepenny Opera“, „Hair“ and the controversial „Jerry Springer – The Opera“ were sure to evoke nostalgia among loyal theatre fans.

Invited artists included, among others, Katarzyna Granecka, Justyna Szafran, Magdalena Szczerbowska, Ewa Szlempo-Kruszyńska, Małgorzata Walenda, Klaudia Waszak, Justyna Woźniak, Emose Uhunmwangho, Konrad Imiela, Rafał Kozok, Tomasz Leszczyński, Albert Pyśk, Dawid Suliba i Marek Zawadzki. Their energetic and passionate performance kept the audience enthralled throughout the concert. A wonderful entry into the new year with light music that brings hope for the future.

The entire event was hosted by a unique duo: Justyna Szafran and Konrad Imiela. Their ability to move on stage, their sense of humour and their interaction with the audience made every moment full of joy and enthusiasm.

Another highlight of the evening was the great collaboration with dancers such as Bożena Bukowska, Aneta Mazur, Mateusz Brenner and Jacek Skoczeń, who added energy and dynamics to each performance.

The choir of the Capitol Musical Studio and the orchestra under the baton of conductor Adam Skrzypek created a wonderful harmony of sound, giving the whole a proper character.

The Capitol’s New Year’s Eve Gala has certainly added a chapter to the history of theatre as an unforgettable event that brought musical lovers together in the magic of shared fun and music.

There was also a trio, but if you would like to know who broke the conventions of the gala, I invite you to this event. You can still take part in February at the Capitol Musical Theatre in Wrocław.
