Weihnachtslieder in Johannesburg

Drei besinnliche Adventkonzerte am 30.November und am 7. Dezember

Jedes Land hat seine weihnachtlichen und vorweihnachtlichen Traditionen. In Oesterreich der Advent mit Christkindlmaerkten, der Nikolo und Krampus – obwohl   paedagogisch kritisiert – das Backen von Weihnachtsbaeckerei und – wenn es die Erderwaermung gestatten sollte – auf verschneiten Christbaummaerkten das Suchen nach schoenen, gerade und hoch gewachsenen Tannen . In Suedafrika wird auch die Vorweihnachtszeit besinnlich verbracht – oft weniger hektisch als in Europa – und  Weihnachten im Sommer ( Suedhalbkugel!) unter Palmen , verbunden mit einem Badeurlaub oder am eigenen swimming pool  hat auch seinen Reiz .Aber besonders schoen ist das Singen von Weihnachstliedern, hier Christmas Carols genannt. Diese Lieder haben teils besinnlichen, teils und sogar oefters humorvollen und sehr froehlichen Inhalt. Wenig ueberraschend dasz SITTOPERA gegen Ende der Saison drei Adventkonzerte organisierte.

Das erste fuer den ‘Austrian Club Johannesburg ‘, der unter Fuehrung der sehr ruehrigen Elfie Kollnig  die in Johannesburg und Umgebung ansaessigen Auslandsoesterreicher vereinigt und  jedes Jahr eine Nikolofeier veranstaltet, dessen Zweck es vor allem ist, Kindern aus einem Kindergarten fuer beduerftige Kinder – nicht nur schwarze Kinder ! – einen ueppigen Nikolo – der an der Botschaft amtierende Konsul war so nett zu amtieren – zu bescheren.  Schoene Christmas Carols  zu singen gehoert dazu und so haben der bewaehrte Tenor Phiwe Makaula  und die junge aufstrebende Sopranistin Thembi Mipi vier der beliebtesten Carols praesentiert. Sehr charmant und sicher unter freiem Himmel gesungen und die Saenger  durften einige “Zugaben “singen; “O mio babino caro’und “O Sole mio”haben zwar mit Weihnachten nix zu tun aber dem Zuhoerern gefiel es sehr.

Weiter zum 2.Adventsonntag an dem SITTOPERA ausgewaehlte Freunde zu  Christmas Carols  und Bueffet in ihr Hauptquartier einlud.  Auch hier der immer zuverlaessige Tenor Phiwe Makaula und  eine sehr vielversprechende Stimme aus dem “Yende-Viermaederlhaus”, die Sopranistin Sasa Yende. ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘On the 1^st day of Christmas ..”- ein besonders humorvolles Lied – , “Rudolf, the red-nosed Reindeer ‚ und – natuerlich- “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht” wurden souveraen und stimmlich schoen und elegant praesentiert. Viel Applaus und Bravo Rufe! Sehr inspirierend da nachher einer der Gaeste – ein begabter Amatuerpianist – spontan  auf dem C .Bechstein Pianino einige jazzige Nummern spielte. Beste Unterhaltung! Und dann ging es spaetnachmittags weiter nach …

.. der orthodoxen Kirche St Nikolaus von Japan in der die Kirchenmusik und das heisst in der orthodoxen Tradition der Chorgesang von der Chorchefin  Georgia Jammine sehr gepflegt wird. Auch hier preasentierte SITTOPERA zwei junge, aufstrebende Saenger. Tshepo Skosana, Tenor und die erst 22 jahre junge Kganya Moeketsi . Auch hier vier bekannte Christmas Carols die von den beiden Saengern hinreissend praesentiert wurden. Der Master of Ceremony (MC)  machte ihrem Berichterstatter nachher ein Gestaendniss: Beide bewarben sich fuer einen Auftritt mit einem jeweils solidem Lebenslauf und Referenzen aber ein Vorsingen war aus Zeitgruenden nicht moeglich. Also; noch  nie gehoert! Kann ja maechtig danebengehen. Ging nicht. Ganz im Gegenteil. Zwei junge, sehr ueberzeugende Stimmen die sich auch fuer diesen Auftritt bestens vorbereitet hatten. Erstklassig in Praesenz und Spiel, humorvoll und besinnlich in der Praesentation.  Tshepo besitzte eine reife, starke aber dennoch elegante und nuancierte Tenorstimme die vor allem fuer das Buffofach bestens geeignet ist.  Kganya aber nenne ich die Entdeckung der Saison. Nochmals, 22 jahre jung; eine kraftvolle aber dennoch sehr elegante Sopranstimme mit dramatischem Potential.  Beide sehr ueberzeugend. Die Zuhoerer waren begeistert und gaben eine ‘standing ovation’. Im September 2026 in einem eigenen Konzert in Johannesburg zu hoeren. Sollte man sich bereits vormerken.

Alles in allem: besinnlich und froehlich und auf hohem Niveau!

Christmas Carols  in Johannesburg

Three reflective advent concerts on the 30.November and on the 7. December

 Every country has its Christmas and advent traditions. In Austria the advent with “Christkindlmaerkten,” the  “Nikolo and Krampus” –  although  not correct for the woke crowd  – baking sweet cakes and Chr istmas  sweeties and – if global warming tolerates that  – looking in snow deep markets  of Christmas trees after handsome, upright and high fir-trees.In South Africa also time before Christmas is lived reflective and relaxed – definitely less hectic than in Europe –  and  Christmas in summer ( Southern hemisphere !) under palms , combined with  holidays on the beach or at the own  swimming pool  is also a nice thing . But especially wonderful is the singing of  Christmas Carols . Those songs possess partly a reflective, partly and quite often  a humouros and joyful content. No surprise that  SITTOPERA organized three concerts towards the end of the season.

The first one for the  ‘Austrian Club Johannesburg ‘, which under the leadership of very energetic  Elfie Kollnig unites the Austrian expats  living in Gauteng and celebrates a ‘Nikolo’ every year. Purpose is mainly to give needy – not only black ones ! – children from a pre-school a very rich “Nikolo treat “ presented by the Austrian Consul who served in this  different noble position. . Singing  beautiful  Christmas Carols  is part of it  and therefore the always reliable tenor Phiwe Makaula  and the young, aspiring soprano  Thembi Mipi presented  four of the most popular Carols. Very charming done and presented under open sky and the singers had to do some encores ; “O mio babino caro’and “O Sole mio” don’t have anything to do with Christmas but the audience liked it very much.

Going on to the 2^nd Sunday in advent; on that date SITTOPERA invited selected friends to  Christmas Carols  and a buffet at their headquarters.  Also here  you met the always reliable tenor Phiwe Makaula and  one most promising voice from the “ Yende trefoil” , the soprano  Sasa Yende. ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘On the 1^st day of Christmas ..”- a most funny song – , “Rudolf, the red-nosed Reindeer ‚ and – of course –  “ Silent Night, Holy Night “  had been presented in a sovereign, elegant and beautiful way.  A lot of applause and shouts of Bravo!   Very inspiring as afterwards one of the guests – a gifted amateur piano player –  spontaneously played some ritzy jazzy pieces on the C .Bechstein upright. Best of entertainment it was ! And then in the late afternoon one proceeded to  …

.. the Orthodox Church of St Nicholas of Japan where  Church  music and that means in the Orthodox tradition the choir singing is very well cultivated by  the choir leader Georgia Jammine .Here SITTOPERA presented two, aspiring singers. Tshepo Skosana, a tenor and the only 22 years young  Kganya Moeketsi . Also at this event four well known Christmas Carols had been presented by both singers in a most excellent way.  The  Master of Ceremony (MC)  confessed afterwards to yours truly: both applied for a stage with   their solid CV’s and references but a test singing was not possible due to time pressure. Therefore: never heard. Could mightily go wrong. Did not ! Just to the contrary.Two young, very convincing voices who prepared themselves excellently for that gig. First class in presence and play, full of humour and reflective in their presentation.  Tshepo possesses a mature, strong but nevertheless elegant and nuanced tenor voice which  can be excellently  placed in buffo characters.  But Kganya I call the discovery of this season. Once again, just 22 years young; a powerful  but nevertheless very elegant soprano voice with a dramatic potential. Both very convincing.  The audience had been excited and gave a standing ovation. They will be on stage in a concert of  their own in  September 2026 in  Johannesburg . One should already put this in the diary. 

All in all: reflective and funny and on a high level!
