Opernengel im Advent

Konzert in der St Georgskirche, Johannesburg

Das Duo Dr Lisa Engelbrecht , Pianistin und Sopranistin und Lindsay Louise Thomson, Mezzosoprano  firmiert seit Jahren als “Opernengel’. SITTOPERA ™organisiert seit Jahren gerne fuer  dieses dynamische Gesangs- und Klavierduo Konzerte. Diesmal drehte sich das Program “La Vie en Rose” um Rosen,Blumen, Damen und die Liebe. Die Anglikanische St Georgskirche ist der Musik sehr verbunden, wurde vom  beruehmten Architekten Sir Herbert Baker im romanischen Stil erbaut , besitzt einen sehr gepflegten Garten mit – no na- sehr englischem Rasen, ein Kirchenschiff mit bester Akustik und einen schoenen Konzertfluegel ( und auch eine der besten Orgeln in Suedafrika). Also ein Ort der bestens fuer ein stilvolles Konzert geeignet ist. 

Eingeleitet wurde es durch die erst neunjaehrige Cynthia Wang, die feurig und melancholisch den klassischen Czardas auf der Violine praesentierte. Sodann praesentierten  Lisa und Lindsay  barocke Schoenheit mit  Henry Purcell’s “Music for a while”aus dessen Musikdrama ‘Oedipus’  und die Arie der Semele  “ Endless pleasure” aus  Georg Friedrich Haendel’s gleichnamiger Oper.  Sodann ging es um die Rosen mit  “ The last rose of summer’ aus Friedrich von Flotow’s ‘Martha’ , Franz Schubert’s “ Heidenroeslein” und der Konzertarie “Vanne o Rosa fortunata “von Vincenzo Bellini. Rosen und Blumenbouquets wurden  musikalisch ueberreicht  durch Christian Sinding’s “ Fruehlingsrauschen “, der Liebesarie des gluecklosen Siebel  –  Juwelen schlagen Blumen immer mit links  – aus Charles Gounod’s ‘Faust ‘( auch als Margarete’’ bekannt). und dem (leider) unverzichtbaren “Blumenduet’aus Leo Delibe’s ‘Lakme’. Sodann wurde der unsterblichen und tragischen Edith Piaf mit “Hymne l’amour’ , “Non, je regrette rien’und ‘La vie en rose ‘gehuldigt. Sodann bewegten wir uns nach  Noramerika mit  George Gershwin’s  “Someone to watch over me “ aus dem Erfolgsmusikal “Oh, Kay” , ‘Summertime’aus ‘Porgy und Bess’, “With one look” aus Andrew Loyd Webber’s ‘Sunset Boulevard’. Dazwischen ein Abstecher nach Sizilien mit Ennio Moricones  Liebesthema aus ‘Cinema paradiso’. Sodann Mark Adamo’s “Somethings are meant to be ‘ aus seiner zeitgenoessischen Oper ‘Little women’.  Zum Abschluss gab es  Freddy Mercury’s Hymne auf Barcelona, bekannt durch die gemeinsame Auffuehrung mit Montserrat Cabale und schliesslich als Da capo   “ Ich haett getanzt heut Nacht” aus ‘My fair Lady” und weil es so schoen war eine zweite Zugabe mit Harold Arlen’s “Someone over the Rainbow” aus dem Film ‘Der Zauberer von Oz’, weltberuehmt gemacht durch Judy Garland.

Ein sehr elegantes musikalisches Bouquet  aus Klassischem und Modernem, Oper und Film, Chanson und Musical , altem und neuem; distinguiert von den beiden Saengerinnen zusammengestellt . Lisa Engelbrecht  und Lindsay Louise Thomson praesentierten sehr  gekonnt und ueberzeugend , ebenso musikalisch intensiv wie auch manchmal locker und entspannt . Ein florales Konzert von hohem aesthetischen Niveau; eine grosse musikalische Bandbreite und alles sehr gepflegt vorgebracht. Harald Sitta als MC praesentierte mit einigen launigen Worten die Musikstuecke.  Das Publikum danke mit viel Applaus und nachher gab es noch Gelegenheit unter dem Sternenhimmel Johannesburg’s bei  Sekt mit den Kuensterinnen zu plaudern, Fotos zu machen und Autogramme einzusammeln.  Stilvoll ! Ein SITTOPERA Konzert eben ….

Opera Angels in Advent’s time …

Concert at the  St George  Church, Johannesburg

 Since years the duo Dr Lisa Engelbrecht , pianist and soprano and Lindsay Louise Thomson, Mezzo-soprano  appears under the  ‘trade name’ of “Opera angels .SITTOPERA ™ with pleasure organizes since years  for this dynamic musical piano and voice duo concerts. This time the program  “La Vie en Rose” centered around roses, flowers, ladies and love. The Anglican Church of St George in Parktown  likes to cultivate music, was built by the famous  architect Sir Herbert Baker in a romanic  style , possesses a very cultivated garden with a well taken care of  – no surprise – English lawn , a Church nave with excellent acoustics and a fine concert piano ( and also one of the best organs in South Africa). Therefore a venue most proper for  a stylish concert.  

Opened it was by only nine years old Cynthia Wang, who both melancholic and full of temperament played the classic Cszardas on the violin. Then Lisa and Lindsay presented baroque beauty with  Henry Purcell’s “Music for a while” from his music drama ‘Oedipus’  and the aria of  Semele  “ Endless pleasure” from  Georg Friedrich Haendel’s  opera of the same name.  Then it turned around roses with   “ The last rose of summer’  from  Friedrich von Flotow’s ‘Martha’ , Franz Schubert’s “ Heidenroeslein” and the concert aria  “Vanne o Rosa fortunata “ by Vincenzo Bellini. Roses and flower bouquets had then be presented musically through Christian Sinding’s “ Spring time rustle “, the love arai of hopeless  Siebel  –  jewellery always beat flowers with ease – from Charles Gounod’s ‘Faust ‘( also known as  Margarete’’ ) and the (unfortunately) unavoidable  ‘Flower duet’ from  Leo Delibe’s ‘Lakme’. Then  we paid hommage to the eternal and also tragic Edith Piaf with  “Hymne l’amour’ , “Non, je regrette rien’ and ‘La vie en rose ‘. Then we moved on to North America with  George Gershwin’s  “Someone to watch over me “ from the smash hit musical  “Oh, Kay” , ‘Summertime’ from ‘Porgy und Bess’, “With one look” from Andrew Loyd Webber’s  musical ‘Sunset Boulevard’. In between a travel to sicily with  Ennio Moricones  love theme from “C inema paradiso’. Then Mark Adamo’s “Somethings are meant to be ‘  from his contemporary opera   ‘Little women’.  As a finale  we had been served with   Freddy Mercury’s hymn to Barcelona, well known through the common performance with Montserrat Cabale and then finally  as encore  “ I could have danced all night” from “My fair Lady” and as it was so beautiful  a second encore with  Harold Arlen’s “Someone over the Rainbow”  from the film “The wizard of Oz’, made world famous by Judy Garland.

A very elegant musical bouquet out of classical and modern, opera and film, chanson and musical, old and new one, put together by both singers in a distinguished way. lt . Lisa Engelbrecht  and Lindsay Louise Thomson presented very well and convincing,  both musically intense but also relaxed and with a twinkle of the eye. A floral concert on a high aesthetic level, a wide musical bandwidth and that presented very cultivated.  Harald Sitta as MC presented in a a few humorous lines the pieces. The audience thanked the artists with a lot of applause and afterwards we had the opportunity under the star lighted sky of Johannesburg, well nourished by some sparkling wine to chat with the artists, make photos and get signatures. Stylish! One SITTOPERA concert, no surprise …
