“ BAROQUE N’ROLL” with Megan Kahts
South Arican’s cultural events, freshly relieved from all corona measures – here and there abolished without if and when’s – is hit right now in the coldest winter month of June by massive power cuts. Nevertheless SITTOPERA ™ organized on the 29th of June a concert with Megan Kahts under the slogan “Baroque n’Roll” at the Anglican Church of St George in Johannesburg. This parish not only cultivates sacral music, possesses a wonderful, powerful organ, with Marnus Greyling one eminent music director and organist and is also eager to cultivate classic music. The right place therefore for such a kind of concert.
Megan Kahts just performs as Cherubino and in between the perfomances of “Nozze di Figaro” in Cape Town and Johannesburg she had time for this concert, a rich assembly of baroque opera and oratory music. The concert started with arias from Haendel’s “Rinaldo’ and proceeded then with arias from Vivaldi’s “La Fida Ninfa”, “Il Tamerlano” and the oratory “ Juditha triumphans’ . Megan Kahts ,since many years outstanding in the realm of baroque opera and sacral music was brilliantly in form and did let the audience forget winterly coldness by the warmth and intensity of her voice. The combination out of a glorious voice, a profound organ and the acoustics of a sacral space in Romanic style was most precious. As Interludium Marnus Greyling played the Passacaglia by Johann Sebastian Bach. Then followed, accompanied on piano, one of the most moving Cantatas by Joseph Hayden, “Arianna a Naxos’ and again with organ the “Laudamus Te” from the ‘Gloria’ of the great C-minor mass by Mozart. As encore Schubert’s “An die Musik” was presented. Great, well earned applause for Megan Kahts and Marnus Greyling who formed a most excellent team. Harald Sitta as “Master of Ceremony” guided through the program with short notes about the composers and the pieces. A triumph for Baroque music and Viennese Classic!
