JOHANNESBURG/ Südafrika: SASA YENDE CONCERT IN JOHANNESBURG Schau, was kommt aus Piet Retief! (5. Juli 2025)  

Im Juni und auch Juli  ist es in Johannesburg sehr kalt.Da sollte man eigentlich nicht singen aber das Studio des Roodepoort Theaters  ist gut geheizt also hat SITTOPERA  die Gelegenheit ergriffen, im Rahmen ihrer Konzertserie “Fine talents & rising stars” eine vielversprechende Saengerin aus dem Yende Clan unter dem Titel “ Nominis locis dignis”vorzustellen. Nomusa “Sasa’Yende praesentierte ein anspruchsvolles Programm vom Barock bis  zur Operette.

Alle guten Veranstaltungen beginnen mit Wagner, am besten die “Rienzi” Ouvertuere  aber die Senta Ballade ist auch schoen, die sehr begabt und engagiert von der jungen Thando Mabuza ( die von einem Partnerunternehmen der SITTOPERA, naemlich B-Sharp zur Verfuegung gestellt wurde. Thando  schloss auch das Konzert mit dem popularen amerikanischen Lied “Oh that it were so”von Frank Bridge. Natuerlich ist es noch ein weiter Weg von der Senta Ballade zur Gestaltung einer ganzen Wagnerrolle  aber Thando liesz in Stimme und Vortrag aufhorchen. Wagnerpotential dasz man sich merken sollte.

Sasa Yende  begann mit “How beautiful are the feet “  aus Haendel’s ‘Messias’, ein Werk, das bei der Urauffuehrung keinen grossen Erfolg hatte. Premierenerfolge oder -misserfolge sagen wenig ueber das spaetere Schicksal einer Komposition.  Sodann folgte Schubert’s  “Ellen’s third song” aus einem Gedichtzyklus von Sir Walter Scott von denen Schubert sieben Gedichte vertonte und das als “Ave Maria” bekannt ist.

Sasa blieb in Oesterreich und trug Rezitativ und Arie “Como scoglio’der Fiordiligi  aus ‘Cosi fan tutte’vor .Dann folgte grosse franzoesische Oper mit   “Ah, je veux vivre”, die Walzerarie der Juliette aus Gunoud’s  “Romeo et Juliette”. Das “Lied an den Mond”aus Dvorak’s ‘Rusalka ‘folgte  und Sasa schloss mit “Che il ben sogno” , der Arie der Magda aus Puccini’s “La Rondina”(Die Schwalbe). Wussten Sie, dasz Puccini urspruenglich  eine Operette fuer das Wiener Carl-Theater komponieren sollte, zu vielen gesprochenen Text in einem Buehnenwerk ablehnte  und “La Rondina’sich als komische Oper an den Stil des Rosenkavaliers anlehnen sollte ?  Kriegsbedingt wurde das Ganze eine Oper die 1917 in Monte Carlo aufgefuehrt wurde.  Als Zugabe praesentierte Sasa die Arie der Adele “Mein Herr Marquis” aus der “Fledermaus”.

Nomusa “Sasa ‘Yende trug ein populaeres aber dennoch anspruchsvolles Programm sicher und engagiert vor. Sie besitzte eine voluminoese aber dennoch elegante Stimme, sicher in den Tiefen und Hoehen,   ein schoenes tremolo, lyrisch bis gemaessigt dramatisch und auch Koloraturfaehig. Alles in allem eine reife Leistung.Wir hoerern sie gerne wieder.

In einem freundlich gefuehrtern Interview  erzaehlte Sasa einiges ueber sich und ihre Laufbahn; interessant , dasz die “Yendes’ein grosser Familienklan im koeniglichen Rang sind und sie im Juli die grosse Herausforderung des UNISA ( University of South Africa) Stimmwettbewerbs zu bewaeltigen haben wird. Wir wuenschen guten Erfolg. Also hat Suedafrika ein schoenes stimmliches, vierblaettriges “Yende”-Kleeblatt (Pretty, deren juengere Schwester Nombulelo/ die auch schon bei SITTOPERA  auftrat/ , sowie Nonhlanhla (die im Mai die Amneris in einer Auffuehrung der Oper Kapstadt gab) und eben Sasa.

Laetitia Orlandi, einer der besten Pianisten Suedafrikas begleitete sicher und engagiert und man sah ihr an, dasz es fuer sie eine Freude war, diese noch jungen Stimmen zu begleiten.

Harald Sitta   fuehrte  humorvoll und  informativ durch das Programm.

Das zahlreich erschienene Publikum  ging voll mit und spendete reichlichen, wohlverdienten Applaus.

Das Roodepoort Theater  mit all seinen Auffuehrungen, auch viel Ballet, ist empfehlenswert.

Das am selben Tag die “Springboks”das  italienische Rugbyteam  deutlich besiegten rundete einen schoenen Samstag ab.

SASA YENDE CONCERT IN JOHANNESBURG

In June and July it is quite cold in Johannesburg. One should not sing then but the studio of the Roodepoort Theatre is well heated and therefore SITTOPERA took the opportunity, to present within the framework of it’s concert series “Fine talents & rising stars” a very promising singer form the Yende Clan under the title “Nominis locis dignis” (Worthy of the name and the place).Nomusa “Sasa’Yende presented a demanding program from the Baroque to operetta. 

All good events start with  Wagner, best with the overture to  “Rienzi” but the ballade of Senta is also very nice which was presented in a gifted and engaged way by the young  Thando Mabuza ( who was ‘ leased”  by a partner enterprise of SITTOPERA, namely  B-Sharp ). Thando also closed the concert with a popular American song “Oh that it were so” by Frank Bridge. Naturally it is a long way from the Senta ballad to a whole Wager role but Thando invited in voice and presentation to listen. She possesses Wagner potential which should be noted.

Sasa Yende started with “How beautiful are the feet “from Haendel’s ‘Messiah’, an oratory which at the first performance did not have a rousing success.  Successes or failures at the first performance do not tell too much about the later destiny of a composition. Then followed Schubert’s   “Ellen’s third song” from a poem cycle by Sir Walter Scott of which Schubert set in music seven poems. Better known this art song is as “Ave Maria”.

Sasa stayed in Austria and presented recitative and aria of Fiordiligi “Como scoglio’ from ‘Cosi fan tutte’. Then followed great French Opera with   “Ah, je veux vivre”, the waltz aria of Juliette from Gunoud’s  “Romeo et Juliette” followed by the ‘song to the moon’ from Antonin Dvorak’s ‘Rusalka ‘ and Sasa closed her performance with  “Che il ben sogno” , an aria of Magda from Puccini’s “La Rondina”( The swallow). Did you know that originally Puccini should compose an operetta for the Viennese Carl-theatre, opposed to much spoken text within a stage production and that “La Rondina’sich should as a comoc opera resemble the “Rosenkavalier”?   Due to the war the whole thing became an opera which was first performed 1917 in Monte Carlo.  wurde. As encore sasa presented the aria of Adele “Oh my dear Marquis”from   “Die Fledermaus” (The bat by Johann Strauss 2^nd). .

Nomusa “Sasa ‘Yende presented a popular but nevertheless demanding programm in a secure and spirited way. She possesses a voluminous nevertheless elegant voice, secure  in the lower and higher spheres, a fine tremolo,   , lyric up to moderately dramatic and also able to do coloratura.  All in all very well done and we like to hear her again. 

In a candid interview Sasa told us about herself and her career; interesting that all “Yendes” belong to a big family clan having Royal rank and that she has to master in July a great challenge with the UNISA voice competition.  We may wish all the best. Therefore South Africa possesses a fine vocal  triplet of four leaves (Pretty, her younger sister  Nomulelo/ who already appeared for SITTOPERA) and Nonhlanhla (who was in May the Amneris in a production by Cape Town Opera) die im Mai die Amneris in einer Auffuehrung der Oper Kapstadt war) and of course  Sasa.

Laetitia Orlandi, one of the best pianists of South Africa, accompanied well spirited and secure and you got the impression, that it was joyful for her to accompany those young voices.

Harald Sitta as MC guided with humour and anecdotes through the program.

The numerous audience was emotionally gripped and dedicated a lot of well-deserved applause.

The Roodepoort theatre with it’s lot of productions, also many ballets, is recommendable.

That on the same day the “Springboks” did clearly defeat the Italian rugby team rounded off a wonderful Saturday.
