Johannesburger Philharmonisches Orchester
“Summertime”, “My Man’s gone now” (Arien der Bess),Porgy’s “I got plenty o’nuttin’”, das Duet “You is my woman now”, Porgy’s “It ain’t necessarily so” und das Duet “I loves you, Porgy”.

Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra
Gala Concert with Pumeza Matshikiza and Musa Ngqungwana
29th of October 2026 in Joburg
Right here, in sunny South Africa, South of the Equator – for all in Austria who made matric after 1990 – we enjoy Springtime, nearly as warm as summer and rich musical offerings which for example is presented to us by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the artistic leadership of the CEO Bongani Tembe in the Linder Auditorium of the university of the Witwatersrand. Four concerts on the 29th of October, the 5th, the 12th and the 19th of November take place. For all of you , who quick in decision like to fly in to Johannesburg – Air Ethiopia going via Addis Abbeba with a travel time of about 15 hours is recommendable – your reviewer of art may describe the programs shortly: 5th of November Resphigi, ‘ The Birds ; Mozart’s Violin concerto number 4 with Sungmin Cho as soloist and Tchaikovsky’s Swan lake suite. On the 12th of November Beethoven’s Coriolanus Overture; his piano concert number 4 with Yu Kosuge as soloist and Bizet’s 1st symphony in C-major. On the 19th of November Borodin’s Overture to ‘ Prince Igor’ , Rachmaninoff’s piano concert number 2 with Polina Osetinskaya as soloist and Shostakovitch’s Symphony number 9. This being a fine, demanding presentation predominantly of Russian master composers. Remark: In Europe, especially in Germany and Austria some riff-raff would probably pout around and demand that Tchaikovsky must be punished for this so very very bad and evil Putin. Thanks God I am living here.
Back to the first concert , the Gala concert which had been adorned by soprano Pumeza Matshikiza – very well known to the readers of the ‘Neuen Merker’ – who appeared recently in the exceptional roles of Rusalka, Aida and Bess and appeared also – this shall be noted with great thankfulness- a few times for SITTOPERA ( Yours truly small concert organizing business) and the bass-baritone Musa Ngqungwana . Also he has appeared multiple times internationally , for example as Leporello, Don Magnifico ,Blaubart, king Amonoraso , Don Pizarro , Dr Bartolo,Dulcamara and Capulet.
The concert started with the ‘Johannesburg Festival Overture’ by William Walton. That oeuvre might not be so well known in Austria. It was commissioned to this English composer for the 70 years jubilee of the town of Johannesburg . That overture is composed in the form of a rondo and sounds in a flashy, vital, energetic and profoundly rhythmic style. Being exactly as this metropolitan town is which is judged by your reviewer of art sometimes as abhorrent but always finds her fascinating and full of creative live and therefore love-able. Also because Johannesburg is a very creative place and we have got back-bone here and despite all challenges always put ourselves back on our feet. And whoever let his gaze wander from the northern crest of the CBD northwards over all those suburbs will see the largest, artificially by humans created forest into which our suburbs – some resembling a little bit cosy villages – nestle themselves into it. Into this overture also African musical elements are interwoven and the orchestration encompasses beside a lot of wind-wood and brass also castanets, maracas and rumba sticks. Flashy, noisy, vivid and crackly as Jo-burg is and whoever dislikes this genius loci can choose to live somewhere else. Very beautiful and vividly played under the conductor Jean-Claude Picard. A lot of well deserved applause.
Then appeared Pumeza Matshikiza and Musa Ngqungwana with six pieces from ‘ Porgy and Bess’. “Summertime”, “My Man’s gone now” ( arias of Bess),Porgy’s “I got plenty o’nuttin’”, the duet “You is my woman now”, Porgy’s “It ain’t necessarily so” and the duet “I loves you, Porgy”. Both presented and sung very beautiful, sensitive and with lot of love but also powerful and voluminous in this real tragic story – Bess is not really the most nicest in her unsteady interhuman relationships and Porgy’s only possession is a wheelbarrow and a goat but despite all he remains unshaken and optimistic. Pumeza Matshikiza’s lyric soprano voice which also possesses dramatic potential sounded in an elegant way velvet like, mysterious and flexible; like I ruby I call her voice. And if she would once like to think of a Wagner role ( why not Isabella in “ Banning of Love” or Ada or Lora in “ The fairies”) then she could be a fantastic Isolde. Also Musa Ngqungwana impressed with a warm, sensitive, voluminous but always fine placed basso voice. A very sympathetic singer and with him I also think of some Wagner roles like king Heinrich , Daland, king Marke and Gurnemanz . A concert put together with pieces from various Wagner operas with both of them could be a musical dainty bit. That we will start to contemplate ….
A lot of applause and a standing ovation which was highly deserved. It must be remarked that Pumeza Matshikiza caught on the day before the concert a nasty cold and had to make fit herself with infusions. Maybe others would have quit but not an energetic and strong-willed who shall be thanked especially for that.
Hopefully the benign readers don’t hold for the following remarks Yours truly to be a “Beckmesser “ . We know, that orchestra sits and plays in the pitch and the singers appear on stage. Banality wisdom the philosopher rightfully calls that emanation! At this concert the orchestra surrounded on the stage both singers. I perfectly know that within this constellation it cannot be done otherwise and Jean-Claude Picard masterly – as far as musically possible – tried to muffle the orchestra. Nevertheless it was slightly sub-optimal. That both singers could place their voices – without convulsively forcing their voices – is a strong point in their favour. Nevertheless, with then space given by the stage one could have placed the strings about 2 meters backwards and woodwinds and brass a little bit sideward’ s. Please, may you consider my modest remarks next time ? But beside this small objection the performance of orchestra and the singers had been glorious.
After a break the audience listened to Gustav Holst’s “ The Planets”. A wonderful musical journey from Mercury to Neptune – ( the – in the meantime not a planet anymore – planet Pluto was not yet discovered in the year 1918 ) in which very strong wood and brass and the strings sounded wonderful and harmonic. A opulent piece of program music whose presentation was rightfully applauded strongly.
Take it all in all; a beautiful concert that opened the Springtime season of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra – which was excellently in shape – in a dignified way. Jean-Claude Picard – who is a Canadian with an impressive record of international appearances- may be thanked once more for his excellent and sensitive conducting. The Linder auditorium possessing around 1000 seats was rightfully sold out.
Not to the least the booklet presenting the season’s concert and the artists appearing may be lauded as well designed and containing all the necessary information.
Also in the culinary realm the audience was spoiled by a buffet done by ‘ 27 degrees” caterers. In the break selected guests and the musicians were served with a very lekker buffet with Champagne. Life is beautiful…
