Fruehlingskonzert in Johannesburg

Das Rand Symphonieorchester bringt Noten zum Erbluehen

 Der Winter hier  in Gauteng ( also was man so in Europa als Johannesburg, Pretoria und Eastern Rand kennt ) war auf  ca 1,800 bis 1,900  Metern Seehoehe besonders grauslich und gluehte der Kamin ihres Kunstbetrachters durch 2 Monate fast ununterbrochen  von Morgens bis Abends. Tja, in Afrika ist es eben in dieser Hoehe auch kalt im Winter und die vielbeschworene Erderhitzung greift ganz einfach nicht … . Ab August  ziehen  waermere, angenehmere Temperaturen ein  – ich teile das Jahr hier in 2 Monate Rotwein und heissen Tee (Juni,Juli) und 10 Monate Sekt und Eiscreme ein. Das Rand Symphonieorchester (RSO) hat schon seit einigen Jahren die angenehme Gewohnheit, den Fruehling Anfangs September mit einem Freiluftkonzert einzuleiten, dasz mit einem Picknick auf der weiten Rasenflaeche  der Domus Dei Kirche in Randburg verbunden ist. Also Sonntags den Picknickkorb mit leckeren Speisen und Champagner gefuellt und auf zu einem Ohrenschmaus  der klassischen Musik.

Das RSO unter der erfahrenen und sicheren Stabfuehrung  von Carel Henn ist ein reines Amateurorchester. Man sage jetzt bitte nicht, man wolle nur Profis hoeren. Engagierte, tuechtige Amateurmusiker koennen sehr schoene Konzerte veranstalten und solide, gute musikalische Handwerkskunst  darf nicht missachtet werden. Alle Spitzenleistungen beruhen auf  dem  “Mittelmasz”im aristotelischem Sinne, also brave, solide Musikarbeit die mit der Freude und dem Engagement des Amateurs praesentiert wird.  Und bitte nicht sagen, man wolle nur die Wiener Philharmoniker hoeren und anerkennen; man isst ja auch nicht jeden Tag Trueffel, Lachs und Kaviar! In diesem Sinne sollte man dankbar sein, dasz Damen und  Herren mit  nichtmusikalischem vollem Berufsleben sich die Zeit und Muehe nehmen, schoene klassische Musik zu spielen.

Das Konzert begann – als ausdrueckliche Hommage an Johann Strauss, dessen 200. Geburtstag wir dieses Jahr feiern oder feiern sollten – mit der Oevertuere zu “Die Fledermaus”. Nennen sie den Endesgefertigten einen Rassisten aber den 3/4 Takt musz man im Blut haben, geborener Wiener  sein , mit der Muttermilch aufgesogen haben, von klein auf den Walzer als Hintergrundmusik erlebt haben, die verschlampte Verschleppung  des wienerischen 3/4  Takts beherschen “die Anderen’einfach nicht. Aber dafuer war es solide gespielt und anhoerbar. Etwas anderes; dasz Oesterreich  – trotz sehr engagierter Institutionen wie dem AUSTRIAN CULTURAL FORUM in Pretoria  und der auch sehr kunstfreundlichen Botschaft  – es nicht geschafft hat, eine Gala zur Feier des 200. Geburtstages des “Walzerkoenigs’hier  in Suedafrika zu organisieren und   ausreichend zu foerdern is blamabel; was denken sich die Deppen im “Zentralrindvieh” eigentlich? Dasz man oesterreichische Kulturpraesentation zu Tode ‘spart’, damit man illegal zugereiste Sozialschmarotzer alimentieren kann ? So nicht; dasz wird ein Nachspiel haben! Genug davon, zureuck zu den erfreulichen Toenen des Konzerts.

Sodann erlebten wir den Auftritt  einer noch sehr jungen ( 17 Jahre, im Gymnasium) , aber schon in einigen Momenten zukuenftige Eminenz  andeutenden Sopranistin   Katherine Hamman die Ennio Moricones “Nella fantasia”aus  “The mission” und das beruehmt-beruechtigte Vilja Lied der Hanna Glawari zum Besten gab. Das erste Lied noch sehr verhalten aber die italianita bereits erkennbar, der “Vilja-Ohrwurm” schon durchaus  recht professionell praesentiert und mit einigen Phrasierungen  und Toenen gesungen, die ueberzeugten und   sagen lassen, dasz hier weiter in die Stimmausbildung investiert werden sollte.

Es folgte eine weitere Solistin, die charmante Floetistin Erna van der Merwe die Cecile Chaminad’s  Floeten Concertino in D-Dur, Op 107   sehr gelungen praesentierte. Das Orchester unter Carel Henn  begleitete routiniert , nur  gegen Ende haette man sich stellenweise eine etwas gedaempftere Begleitung gewuenscht. Auch hier; eine junge, begabte Musikerin in deren weitere Ausbildung investiert werden sollte.

Es folgte drei Saetze ( 1.,2. und 4.) aus der  “Simple Symphonie “ von Benjamin Britten als  20-jaehriger geschrieben , deren Themereichtum  auf im Kindesalter  creierten Melodienskizzen beruht . Ein reines Streicherkonzert  bei dem sich vor allem die Streicher im 2.Satz als ein schoener, guter Klangkoerper erwiesen.

Es wurde sodann sehr populaer mit einem “meddley”aus A. L.  Webbers’s “Phantom of the Opera”.Schoen gespielt und  Webber war nicht der Erste, der solides Komponieren mit   dem Talent, Ohrwuermer zu produzieren und Geschaeftstuechtigkeit  verband.  Schoen und gut und gut gespielt auch wenn ihr Kunstbetrachter den ALW so gar nicht aussstehen kann. Macht nix und ist nicht wirklich wichtig  !

Sodann  folgte ein “meddley’aus Leonard Bernstein’s  “West Side Story”  , vom Orchester  con muco gusto gespielt und da merkte man sofort, was wirklich grossartige Kompositionen sind und was routinierter Kommerz.

Das Publikum  dankte mit sehr freundlichem , starken  Applaus  und verlangte eine Zugabe, die leider nicht gegeben wurde. Sehr schade und ein Fehler, der in Zukunft vermieden werden sollte. Also: eine  fesche, frische, kurze Zugabe gehoert dazu! Ad corrigendam pro futuram  !  Das kann schon im November geschehen, wenn das naechste Konzert stattfindet u a mit Brahm’s 1.Klavierkonzert .Darauf freue ich mich schon!

Springtime concert  in Johannesburg

The  Rand Symphony Orchestra   makes scores flourishing

Winter right here in Gauteng ( what they know in Europe more or less as Johannesburg, Pretoria and Eastern Rand  ) was this season at roughly  1,800 meter above sea level  specifically obnoxious and the fire side of your  art reviewer was glowing with coals and fire wood

Through  two months from morning to evening. Well, in Africa it is at these heights also cold in winter and the much discussed so called  earth-heating does simply not work  … . From August on warmer, more pleasant temperatures prevail – I divide the year  here in two months red wine and hot tea (June,July) and 10 months champagne and ice cream. Since years the  Rand Symphonic Orchestra (RSO) cultivates the pleasant tradition to start springtime  with an open-air concert which is combined with a pick-nick at the wide lawn of the  Domus Dei Church in Randburg. Therefore one fills on Sunday the pick-nick basket with fine food and champagne and up one goes to a classical music feast for your ears .

The  RSO under the experienced and secure guidance and conductor-ship  of Carel Henn is a pure amateurs orchestra. One does not tell me now that you only like to hear professionals. Spirited, able amateur musicians  can do very fine concerts and solid, good  musical  “Handwerkskunst” shall not be looked upon.All top achievements rest upon the ‘average’ in the aristotelic sense being  good, solid musical work which is presented with the joy and the impetus of the amateur. And to not tell that one  only wants to hear and recognize the Viennese Philharmonic; one also does not eat every day truffles, salmon and caviar! In that sense one should be thankful that ladies and gentlemen with a demanding non-musical professional live take the time and effort to play fine classical music.

The concert started – as an explicit Hommage to Johann Strauss 2^nd , whose 200^th birthday we celebrate or should celebrate this year – with the overture to “Die Fledermaus” (the bat) . Call yours truly a racist but the  3/4 measure  one has to have in his blood, soaked up with the mother’s milk, from the early days on experienced waltz music as background music , the sloppy procrastination of the Viennese  3/4 measurements the ‘other ones” just do not get. But for that it was played in a solid way and one could listen to it. Something completely different: that Austria – despite very active institutions like the  AUSTRIAN CULTURAL FORUM in Pretoria  and the embassy, also very friendly towards the arts – was not able to organize and support and subsidize a gala concert in honour of the “king of waltz” right here in South Africa is a painful surprise ; what are the idiots in the “central bovine ministry’ thinking ? That you shall cut costs until death is coming for the presentation of Austrian culture in order to have money to aliment illegally immigrating social spongers ?  Not this way: that is of serious concern for the future! Enough of that; back to the pleasant tunes of this concert.

Then we experienced the appearance of a still very young ( 17 years of age, at High school) soprano, who in a few moments indicated already future eminence; Katherine Hamman who did sing  Ennio Moricones “Nella fantasia” from  “The mission” and the famous-infamous Vilja song of Hanna Glawari. The first song presented  quite shy but  italianita one could already  recognize. The “Vilja earwig” quite professionally presented with some convincing phrases and tunes  so that one can say, that you should make further investments in the coaching and training of the voice.

A further soloist followed; the charming flautist  Erna van der Merwe who presented the flute concertino in D-major, op 107 by Cecile Chaminad very well. The orchestra conducted by  Carel Henn  accompanied  safe and secure, just before the end one would have wished for a slightly more quelled accompaniment. Also here: a young, gifted instrumentalist one should invest further into her training.

Followed three  movements ( 1st,2nd and 4th.) from the “Simple Symphony “ written by Benjamin Britten in the age of twenty whose richness in melodies is based on musical sketches from his childhood days. A concert for  pure strings in which especially in the 2^nd movements the strings proved themselves as a fine body of sounds.

Then it became very popular with a  “medley” from A. L.  Webbers’s “Phantom of the Opera”. Fine and well played and Webber was not the first one who combined solid composing with the talent to produce ear-wigs and a sense for money. All fine and well played even  if yours truly cannot stand that ALW. But that is not really important !

Then another  “medley from Leonard Bernstein’s  “West Side Story”  , played by the orchestra con muco gusto and then one recognized immediately what are real great tunes and what only is routine musical setting of notes for the purpose of making money.

The audience thanked with very friendly , strong applause and asked for an encore which unfortunately was not served. Really a pity and a mistake which shall not be made the next time. Therefore: a handsome, fresh , short encore belongs to a concert! Ad corrigendam pro futuram  !  That can already be done in November  when the next concert will take place , presenting f e Brahm’s 1^st piano concert. I am looking forward to it!

A fine mix of popular tunes and not-so-well-known, easy and demanding ones; a really  fresh, vivid, solid played springtime concert. Your  art reviewer  enjoyed it with Champagne and in charming ladies company .A cultivated, relaxed, pleasant Sunday afternoon in a sunny, warm Jo’burg under a wonderful steel blue sky. We live well; how are you doing ?
