Johannesburg/Südafrika: Fruehlingserwachen mit Zandile Mzazi

Dem aufmerksamen Leser des Neuen Merker wird inzwischen nicht entgangen sein, dasz Ihr Endesgerfertigter seine Heimstatt in der suedlichen Welthalbkugel , naemlich Suedafrika hat und hierda jetzt der Fruehling beginnt was musikalisch zu einer groesseren Anzahl von Konzerten fuehrt. Der Winter hier – und man glaube nicht, dasz es in Afrika nur heisz ist – ist naemlich grauslich kalt vor allem in Johannesburg auf fast 2000 m Seehoehe und nasz und sehr windig in Kapstadt. Aber puenktlich Mitte August wurde es angenehm warm und dann schiessen die Fruehlingsveranstaltungen aus dem Boden wie in den oesterreichischen Waeldern die Schwammerln nach dem Regen.
Daphne Kuhn foerdert sehr ruehrig in ihrem “Theatre on the Square”mit regelmaessigen Mittags-Konzerten die klassische Musikszene in Johannesburg und kann man sich schon ab Freitag Mittag auf ein gepflegtes Wochenende einstimmen. Diesmal praesentierte sie mit Zandile Mzazi einen lyrisch-dramatischen Sopran mit beachtlicher internationaler Erfahrung. Zandile hat eine intensive Beziehung zu Wien, war jahrelang Mitglied des Ensembles der Wiener Staatsoper, errang 2016 den 1. Preis beim internationalen Ljuba Welitsch Gesangswettbewerb, debuetierte international als Susanna und absolvierte ihr Studium an der Universitaet Kapstadt wo sie den legendaeren Angelo Gobbato – der viele herausragende suedafrikanische Stimmen zu seiner Zeit pflegte – als Mentor hatte. Familiaer bedingt kehrte sie nach Suedafrika zurueck, die Coronazeit war auch fuer sie unerfreulich und triit sie jetzt wiederum vermehrt in Suedafrika auf. Und wir sind sehr froh sie wieder zu hoeren und zu sehen. Vom schriftlich vorliegenden Programm wich sie in amuesanter Weise stark ab; statt einer Arie aus “Guilo Cesare in Egitto’gab es “Lascia d’io piango” (Lasst mich Weinen) aus Haendel’s “Rinaldo’- eine wunderschoene Komposition die Haendel in damaliger Art gleich dreimal verwendete. Sodann gemaess Programm MMorgana’s Arie “Tormani”aus Alcina und dann statt Zerlina’s “Verdrai Carino” Mozart’s ‘Alleluja” aus ‘Exsultate, jubilate’. Ohnehin schoener ( bin kein Don Giovanni Fan) . Dann praesentierte sie das Lied an den Mond aus ‘ Rusalka’gefolgt von “Je veux vivre’aus Gounod’s ‘Romeo e Juliette’. Zandile fuehrte selbst charmant wie weiland Greta Keller plaudernd – hat sie das in Wien gelernt ? – durch das Programm und nahm auch Publikumswuensche an.So erklang “Oh mio babbino caro” ein Puccini-Schmachtfetzen den man aber immer wieder gerne hoehrt. Auch ausserhalb des vorab geschriebenen Programms erklang eine Elvira Arie aus Bellini’s “Il Puritani”. A capella sang sie ein traditionelles Zulu-Wiegenlied “ Thala Sala” und als eine Zugabe “Summertime” aus “Porgy and Bess’’. Man macht sich in Oesterreich keine Vorstellung wie populaer Sound of Music’in allen englischsprachigen Laendern ist ; also “Climb every mountain”. Naja … Noch eine Zugabe mit “Amazing Grace’machte eine auch geographisch weite Reise komplett.
Zandile Mzazi besitzt eine sehr schoene, gepflegte , nuancierte , vor allem in der Mittelage und den Hoehen ausdrucksstarke Stimme . Sie selbst und ihre Stimme sind elegante Erscheinungen .Gerne haette ich auch etwas von Richard Strauss gehoert – vielleicht eines von den vier letzten Liedern – , sie hat diese ‘Silberstimme’ und ward auch vor einigen Jahren fuer eine projektierte Rosenkavalierproduktion (Corona!) als Marschallin vorgesehen – aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben . Hoechste Zeit sie mehr und auch international auf der Buehne zu sehen. Jedenfalls erhielten die Zuhoerer bei diesem Konzert – trotz verbesserbarer Saalakustik- mehr als angekuendigt.
William Earl ist ein bekannter suedafrikanischer Pianist der gekonnt, symphatisch und einfuehlsam begleitete. Partituren kann man auch schon auf einem ‘tablet’ speichern und ablesen; diese technische Moeglichkeit sollte er vielleicht fuer sich andenken. Ist praktisch !
Ein gepflegtes Mittagskonzert. Der Nelson Mandela Platz beherbergt einige erstklassige Restaurants sodasz sich kulinarische – musische Kombinationen apre verfuehrerisch anbieten.

Spring awakening with Zandile Mzazi

In the meantime it will not have escaped the ardent reader of “ Der neue Merker” that Yours truly has his domicile in the Southern Hemisphere, in South Africa and herewith now spring commences which leads musically to a major number of concerts. Winter right here – and do not assume that it is only hot in Africa – is awfully cold in Johannesburg sitting on nearly 2000 m above sea level and wet and windy it is in Cape Town. But punctually by mid of August it became cozily warm and then the springtime events grow up like mushrooms in the Austrian woods after rain.
In a very busy way Daphne Kuhn supports in her “Theatre on the Square” with regular noon concerts the classical music scene in Johannesburg. One is able to get into a cultivated weekend mood from Friday noon on. This time she presented with Zandile Mzazi one lyric-dramatic soprano with considerable international experience. Zandile has an intense relationship with Vienna, she was through some years member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera, gained 2016 1st prize at the international Ljuba Welitsch singing competition, internationally her debut was as Susanna and completed her studies at the University of Cape Town mentored by the legendary Angelo Gobbato, who cultivated a lot of outstanding South African voices in his time. Due to family reasons she returned to South Africa, corona razzmatazz was also an unpleasant time for her and now she again appears more and more right here. And we are very happy to see and hear her again. From the written program she deviated quite strongly in an amusing way; instead of an aria from “Guilo Cesare in Egitto’ we heard “Lascia d’io piango” ( Let me weep) from Haendel’s “Rinaldo’- one most beautiful composition which Haendel in the then usual way put in action three times. Then according to the program Morgana’s aria “Tormani” from Alcina and then instead of Zerlina’s “Verdrai Carino” Mozart’s ‘Alleluja” from ‘Exsultate, jubilate’. Even better ( I am not a fan of Don Giovanni ) . Then she presented the song to the moon from ‘ Rusalka’ followed by “Je veux vivre’ from Gounod’s ‘Romeo e Juliette’. Zandile herself guided through the program, chatting charmingly like Greta Keller – did she learn that in Vienna ? – and also accepted wishes from the audience. Therefore “Oh mio babbino caro” sounded, one sweet Puccini ear wig which one likes to hear again and again. Also outside the written program she performed one Elvira aria from Bellini’s “Il Puritani”. A capella she did sing a traditional Zulu lullaby “Thala Sala” and as an encore “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess’’. You cannot imagine in Austria how popular “The Sound of Music’ is in all English-speaking countries. Therefor “Climb every mountain”. Well, well … An additional encore “Amazing Grace’ made a journey, also wide geographically, complete.
Zandile Mzazi possesses a very beautiful, cultivated, nuanced particularly in the middle and the high tones strong expressive voice. She herself and her voice are elegant appearances. I would have loved to hear something by Richard Strauss – maybe one of the ‘Four last song’s- , she got this silver voice and was also some years ago destined as “Marshallin” in a projected ( Corona!) production of “ Der Rosenkavalier” – postponed is not given up! It is high on time to see her more on stage, also internationally. In any case the audience received at this concert more than announced.
William Earl is a well known South African pianist who accompanied in an able, sympathetic and sensitive way. By the way; the music one can already put onto and read from a tablet ; this technical possibility he maybe should consider for himself. Practical !
A cultivated noon concert. The Nelson Mandela Square also hosts some first class restaurants seducing to combine music-culinary combinations apre.
