DIE “ OPERN-ENGEL’ . ‘ RUND UM DIE SCHOENHEIT DER NATUR’ . KONZERT IN JOHANNESBURG

Die suedafrikanischen  “ Opera Angels” sind ein, in Suedafrika wohl etabliertes ,  klassisches Musikduo, anerkannt in Suedafrika aber auch in Uebersee.Das Duo besteht aus  Dr Lisa Engelbrecht, Sopran und Klavier  und Lindsay Thomson, Mezzosopran. Lisa ist Chefin der Opernausbildung an der renommierten Opernschule der Universitaet Kapstadt und Lindsay hat bereits fuer verschiedene Opernhaeuser  gearbeitet und macht auch eigene Shows. Waehrend der Covidmassnahmen konnten sie nicht so oft auftreten, vor allem nicht international und Lindsay hatte auf Grund ihres neugeborenen Babys zu pausieren ( unser juengster Opernfan mit suessen blauen Augen) dennoch traten sie im Oktober 2021 fuer   SITTOPERA ™  im Randclub auf und traten nunmehr im April im geistlich -opulenten Rahmen der Anglikanischen Kirche zum Heiligen Franziskus auf, eine Pfarrei die traditionell klassische Musik unterstuetzt und Konzerte anbietet. 

Die “ Engel” haben ein vollstaendig neues Program  namens “ Rund um die Schoenheit der Natur”ausgearbeitet um damit Arien, Lieder und Melodien vorzustellen, die die Natur oder menschliche Einstellungen und Gefuehle angesichts der Natur feiern.  Ein forderndes Programm, bestehend aus 18 Nummern, fuehrte die Zuhoerer durch viele verschiedene Stile klassischer Musik, Laender und Konfrontationen und Gefuehle im Spannungsfeld zwischen Mensch und Natur. Die stuermischen Anfangstakte der Overtuere zum “ Fliegenden Hollaender” eroeffneten das Konzert. Sodann praesentierten die “ Engel” in einem reichen Bogen Melodien von klassischer Oper bis hin zu US-amerikanischer Filmmusik. Eine vielleicht unorthodoxe Mischung,  aber elegant abgestimmt und ausgeglichen. Manchmal als Duet, manchmal mit Lisa “ nur” am Klavier  und Lindsay als Solostimme unterhielten sie uns sowohl in einer gefuehlvollen wie floreal-ueppigen Weise. Herausragend waren “ Sull’ aria’ aus ‘Nozze di Figaro’ ,die “ Liebesbotschaft” aus Schubert’s “ Schwanengesang” , die “Bacarolle”, der “ Gesang an den Mond” aus  “ Rusalka” , die “ Mattinata” von  Leoncavallo, eine Arie aus  Lucy Simon’s Musical “ The secret garden” , ein Potpourie aus dem Film  “ Sound of Music” – man weisz gar nicht wie edel und wunderbar diese Melodien klingen wenn sie durch wirkliche Opernstimmen gesungen werden — und als eine besondere spirituelle Zugabe das “Ave verum corpus” aus einem  Stabat Mater des englischen Komponisten Karl Jenkins. Ein Programm, anspruchsvoll auch fuer das Publikum und auch fuer Ihren Rezessenten sehr interessant, als da der Reichtum moderner, klassischer Angelsaechsischer Komponisten – die am Kontinent oft nicht so gut bekannt sind – auch Teil des Programms waren. 

Die “ Engel”  – Lisa und Lindsay – sangen  in Bestform und, da das Publikum sehr gut mitging, praesentierten sie das ganze, anspruchsvolle  Program in engagierter  und opulenter Weise. Viele Bravorufe, jede Menge Applaus und zum Abschluss eine stehende Ovation waren wohlverdient. Ein eleganter  Abschluss des Konzerts war ein Sektempfang von SITTOPERA ™  im wunderschoenen Pfarrgarten.Dank und Anerkennung fuer die Kirche des Heiligen Franziskus fuer ihre Unterstuetzung klassischer Konzerte.

OPERA ANGELS.  ‘FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH’ – CONCERT IN JOHANNESBURG

The South African „Opera Angels“ are a well-established classical music duo, recognized in South Africa and also overseas. The duo consists of Dr Lisa Engelbrecht, soprano and piano, and Lindsay Thomson, mezzo-soprano. Lisa is head of opera training at the prestigious Opera School of the University of Cape Town and Lindsay has worked for various opera houses. Lindsay also does her own shows. During the Covid-measures they could not perform as often, especially not internationally. Lindsay had to pause due to her new-born baby (our youngest opera fan with sweet blue eyes) nevertheless they performed in October 2021 for SITTOPERA ™ at the Rand Club. Now in April they performed in the spiritually-opulent setting of the Anglican Church of St. Francis, a parish which traditionally supports classical music and hosts concerts regularly.

The „Angels“ have prepared a completely new program called „Around the Beauty of Nature“ to present arias, songs and melodies that celebrate nature or human attitudes and feelings towards nature. A challenging program consisting of 18 numbers led the audience through many different styles of classical music, countries, confrontations and feelings in the tension between man and nature. The concert opened with the stormy opening bars of the overture to „The Flying Dutchman“. Then, the „Angels“ presented a rich variety of melodies ranging from classical opera to American film music. A perhaps unorthodox mixture but elegantly tuned and balanced. Sometimes as a duet, sometimes with Lisa only on piano and Lindsay as solo voice, they entertained us in both a soulful and florally lush manner. Outstanding arias were the „Sull‘ aria“ from „Nozze di Figaro“, the „Love Message“ from Schubert’s „Swan Song“, the „Bacarolle“, the „Song to the Moon“ from „Rusalka“, the „Mattinata“ by Leoncavallo, an aria from Lucy Simon’s musical „The secret garden“ and a medley from the movie „Sound of Music“ – one does not know how noble and wonderful these melodies sound until sung by real opertic voices. And as a special spiritual encore the „Ave Verum Corpus“ from Stabat Mater by the English composer Karl Jenkins.

A program, demanding for the audience and also very interesting for your reviewer. The richness of modern, classical Anglo-Saxon composers, often not so well known on the continent, were also part of the program.

The „Angels“, Lisa and Lindsay, sang in top form and, as the audience went along very well, they presented the whole, demanding program in an engaged and opulent way. The many bravos, lots of applause and the standing ovation at the end, were well deserved. An elegant conclusion to the concert was a champagne reception by SITTOPERA ™ in the beautiful parish garden. Thanks and appreciation to the Church of St. Francis for its support of classical concerts.
