3rd of July 2022 “ Big fighting day” around South African concerts
Under the meritious guidance of Phenye Modiane “JoziOpera” ( Jozi is a nickname for Johannesburg) organized a concert of musicals in Melville, the outstanding pianist Laetitia Orlandi presented in Pretoria songs ( “Lieder”) for oboe and piano under the title “Love in Schumann’s time” , the AfriForum theater celebrates with a matinee the 90th birthday of Kammersaengerin Mimi Coertse und the well gifted tenore Luvo Maranti does together with Lynette Kenned a ‘good by concert’on occasion of the start of his overseas career. As Yours truly is not gifted with the qualifaication of bi- or trilocation we have to concentrate on the concerts in Johannesburg and Pretoria but may announce that Luvo Maranti made a fine impression in last May at the concert of Pumeza Mathsikiza.
In the trendy surburb of Melville ”JoziOper”presented in a intimate setting melodies from musicals as for example “La vie en rose”, “Moon River”, “Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa’, “Santa Luica”or “You never walk alone”. pleasant, light feeding on a Sunday morning, very elegantly presented by three tenores, Phenye Modiane, Mmusi Morekhure und Tebogo Makwe, accompanied by Johny Manamela who showed that they can sing other things more intense but light music has and shall have its place in a trendy suburb. Well done !
Yes, when the road went to Laetitia Orlandi, a leading South African pianist and interpreter of romantic lieder – very excellent – and then to the AfriForum theatre where the 90th birthday of one of the greatest sopranos was celebrated, a decade long career with about 57 great or prominent roles, many many years aligned to Vienna. Mimi Coertse you must not introduce just admire and say ‘thank you’. Even after the end of her stage career she cultivated young and promising singers from all population groups and created with the “Black Tie’ ensemble something lasting. No surprise therefore that twelf successful singers from this ensemble honoured her with arais and scenes, from Fledermaus to Turandot, from Cosi fan Tutte to Rigoletto, from Carmen to Martha and and and! “Wien , Wien, nur Du allein..” (Vienna, Vienna only you …) was a special hommage to her and the town where Mimi Coertse celebrated her great triumphs. It would have been appropriate for the Vienna State Opera to convey an opulent bunch of flowers which a representative of the embassy surely would have presented gladly. That was obviously forgotten, good manners not any more asked for and therefore it was for me as Viennese and representtaive of SITTOPERA ™ an honour to congratulate Mimi Coertse. Loveline art Foundation and other sponsors has to be thanked for their magnaminous support.
