JOHANNESBURG – CRIME CANNOT BEAT CLASSIC MUSIC.NEVER EVER !
“ Sing that! Play that! Compose that!” was the title of the SITTOPERA ™ concert this Saturday, 12th of August in the renowned Rand Club. The aim was to present the South African singer Ongama Mhlontlo , who since years lives in New York both as tenor and composer. Further a young and very promising piano player, who also happens to be a composer , Monthati Masebe was to be presented. A further aim was to present an exciting opera project; an opera about a legendary Xhosa ruler “ King Mamani” who ruled in the 18th century. Compared with her, Lady Macbeth was an salvation army officer.This opera is just now composed by both artists and shall be first performed coming year both in Cape Town (Cape Town Opera under Magdalene Minnaar) and in Johannesburg by SITTOPERA ™.The title role is to be performed by international star soprano Pumeza Matshikiza who recently triumphed at Garsington Opera House as Marie in Fredrick Smetana’s “ Bartered Bride’.
The program was a mix of classic arias and art songs, from Pergolesis “Nina” up to Rodger & Hammerstein’s “ You never walk alone’ from “Carousel” and presenting “ E fermant les yeaux” from “Manon Lescaut” , “Dalla sua pace” from Don Giovanni and the song “Dreams” from the “ Wesendoncklieder”. That part was to be followed by a piano interlude, to be performed by Monthati Masebi , presenting Maurice Ravel’s sonatina “ Modere’, “Survivors log” ,an oeuvre by contemporaneous South African composer Shane Cooper, the “ Moonlight intermezzo’ from “Capriccio” and “ Summer-land” from the contemporaneous US-American composer William Grant Still.
In the second part Ongama Mhlontlo was to be presenting own compositions, art songs written in neo-romantic style “ The allure”, “Zanemvula”, “Purity “ and Maseru”. As final piece a song about the already mentioned King Mamani “Ma’Mani” was to be presented.
The concert was strongly supported by media, the weekly news magazine “ Mail & Guardian” – comparable to the Austrian magazine “profil” and the largest private TV station E-NCA reported.
Everything was set and done fine and a large audience assembled. Who did not appear was the piano player, who after the final rehearsal returned to her home to dress up in gala. The concert was set for 3 PM and she did not and did not appear and no message was received from her. She is very reliable so the organizer and MC, Harald Sitta started to become suspicious. A decision was done quickly. Concerts by SITTOPERA ™ always start with a few times from the overture from “ Rienzi” and as this piece is Ongama Mhlontlo’s favourite overture – he is a confessing Wagnerian- the whole piece was played from the record to gain time and it was decided to start the concert with Ongama Mhlontlo’s art songs; he, being also an accomplished piano player, accompanying himself. Decided and done the concert started with the audience informed and fully understanding. With the closing of “ Rienzi’ overture Monthati Masebi phoned Harald Sitta and in a state of deep shock reported that she was mugged and robbed of her car, she now standing alone in a street in Braamfontain, an area normally safe. Immediately the order was given that a rescue team of SITTOPERA ™ picks her up and brings her into the safety of the club. In the meantime Ongama Mhlontlo performed his art-songs in a very moving and romantic way, also he being under stress as Monthati Masebi is a good friend of him.Nevertheless he performed very well and opened the audience to a new form of specific arts-songs embedded in the Xhosa tradition.
This said and done, Monthati Masebi was rescued and brought to the Rand Club. It is a tradition that after the events SITTOPERA ™ invites the audience to Champagne and biltong and on this Saturday also Harald Sitta’s birthday was to be celebrated with some exquisite Italian specialties.Monthati Masebi entered the large ball room, where concerts take place and was received with a standing ovation and flowers. With the closing of Ongama Mhlontlo’s song performance it was decided to enjoy now Champagne and food and to embrace Monthati Masebi , giving her the warmth and safety of an emphatic audience. A great atmosphere developed and then it was decided to proceed with a shortened first part. And then Monthati Masebi earned her new nickname ‘ the in-destroy-able “ and decided to play her Intermezzo pieces. Standing ovations, the audience rejoicing. She played in a wonderful way as if not effected by the robbery in any way; her play is soft and precise and we can safely expect – she is just 27 years of age – that an incredible talent is growing. After that Ongama Mhlontlo, again taking over the piano, performed “ Nina”, “ You never walk alone’, “Oh mio babbino caro” from ‘ Gianni Schicchi’ and finally Tony’s “ Somethings coming’ from “ West Side Story”. Standing ovations, lot of shouts of “ Bravo’ and the full love and sympathy of an excited audience rewarded the two artists who performed magnificently under these demanding circumstances.
It shall not go un-noted that both artists are members of Royal houses, he from the Xhosa Royal House and she from the Venda Royal House who in their musical activities also proudly stand to their traditions. As it should be! Valid for all!
All is all, a fantastic concert and a moral victory over the dark forces of crime. Kudoos to SITTOPERA’s Harald Sitta and his team who kept cool and efficient under these circumstances. Also kudoos to the team and staff of Rand Club who very professionally supported SITTOPERA’s organization work.

JOHANNESBURG – DAS VERBFRECHEN KANN NIEMALS DIE KLASSISCHE MUSIK BESIEGEN. NIEMALS!
“ Sing that! Play that! Compose that!” war der Titel des von SITTOPERA ™ am 12. August im renommierten Rand Club organisierten Konzertes. Das Ziel war es, dem seit Jahren in New York lebenden, suedafrikanischen Saenger sowohl als Tenor als auch als Komponisten zu praesentieren. Weiters sollte eine junge und vielversprechende Pianistin, die auch als Komponistin hervortritt, praesentiert werden. Ein weiteres Ziel war es, eine aufregendes Opernprojekt vorzustellen. Eine Oper ueber eine legendaere Xhosaherrscherin, “ King Mamani” die im 18. Jahrhundert regierte. Verglichen mit ihr war Lady MacBeth von der Heilsarmee. Diese Oper wird gerade von beiden Kuenstlern komponiert and soll kommendes Jahr uraufgefuehrt werden; in Kapstadt (Cape Town Opera unter Magdalene Minnaar) und in Johannesburg durch SITTOPERA ™. Die Titelrolle wird durch die internationale Starsopranistin Pumeza Matshikiza gesungen werden, die gerade am Garsington Opera House als Marie in Friedrich Smetana’s “ Verkaufte Braut” triumphierte.
Das Programm war eine Mischung klassischer Arien und Lieder, beginnend mit Pergolesis “Nina” bis hin zu Rodger & Hammerstein’s “ You never walk alone’ aus “Carousel” . Weiters sollte “ E fermant les yeaux” aus “Manon Lescaut” , “Dalla sua pace” aus Don Giovanni und “ Traeume” aus dem Zyklus der “ Wesendoncklieder” aufgefuehrt werden. Diesem Teil sollte ein Pianointermezzo folgen, gespielt von Monthati Masebi mit Maurice Ravel’s Sonatina “ Modere’, dem Stueck “Survivors log” , ein Werk des zeitgenoessischen suedafrikanischen Komponisten Shane Cooper,das “ Mondscheinintermezzo’ aus “Capriccio” und “ Summer-land”; ein Werk des zeitgenoessischen US-Amerikanischen Komponisten William Grant Still.
Im zweiten Teil sollte Ongama Mhlontlo seine eigenen Kompositionen vorstellen, Lieder, komponiert im neoromantischen Stil namens “ The allure”, “Zanemvula”, “Purity “ und Maseru”. Als Abschluss sollte ein Stueck ueber den schon erwaehnten Koenig Mamani, “Ma’Mani” aufgefuehrt werden.
Das Konzert wurde von Medien, dem Wochenmagazin “ Mail & Guardian” – vergleichbar mit dem oesterreichischen “ profil” Magazin und der groessten privaten TV Station mit bester Berichterstattung unterstuetzt.
Alles war bereit und fein und eine ansehnliche Zuhoererschaft war versammelt. Wer nicht erschien war die Pianospielerin , die nach der letzten Probe nach Hause fuhr, um sich in Gala zu werfen. Das Konzert war fuer drei Uhr angesetzt und sie erschien und erschien nicht und es kam auch keine Nachricht von ihr. Sie ist sehr verlaesslich sodasz dem Organisator und ‘ Master of ceremony”, Harald Sitta die Sache begann, verdaechtig zu werden. Eine Entscheidung wurde schnell getroffen. Konzerte von SITTOPERA ™ starten immer mit den Anfangstakten der “Rienzi” Overtuere und da diese Ongama Mhlontlo’s Lieblingsovertuere ist – er ist gluehender Wagnerianer – wurde die ganze Overtuere ( von Schallplatte) gespielt um Zeit zu gewinnen und es wurde entschieden, das Konzert mit Ongama Mhlontlo’s Liedern zu beginnen, bei dener er – er ist auch ein anerkannter Klavierspieler– sich selbst am Klavier begleitete. Das entschieden und getan, begann das Konzert mit einer Information des Publikums, das voller Verstaendniss war. Gegen Ende der “ Rienzi’ Overture erhielt Harald Sitta einen Anruf von Monthati Masebi, die im Schockzustand berichtete, dasz sie angefallen und ihr Auto geraubt wurde und sie nun Mutterseelenalleine in einer Strasse in Braamfontain, einer an sich sicheren Gegend, stehe. Sofort wurde der Befehl erteilt, dasz ein Einsatzteam der SITTOPERA ™ sie einhole und in die Sicherheit des Klubs bringe.In der Zwischenzeit trug Ongama Mhlontlo seine Lieder in einer sehr beruehrenden und romantischen Art und Weise vor, auch er unter Stress da Monthati Masebi mit ihm gut befreundet ist . Nichtsdestoweniger hat er sehr gut gesungen und gespielt und das Publikum mit,einer neuen Form spezifischer Lieder, die in der Xhosatradition gruenden, vertraut gemacht.
Gesagt getan, Monthati Masebi wurde abgeholt und in den Rand Club gebracht. Es ist bei SITTOPERA ™ Tradition, dasz nach einem Konzert das Publikum zu Champagner und Biltong – eine suedafrikanische Rindfleischspezialitaet – eingeladen wird und an diesem Samstag sollte auch Harald Sitta’s Geburtstag bei einem italienischem Spezialitaetenbueffet gefeiert werden. Monthati Masebi betrat den grossen Ballsaal, indem die Konzerte stattfinden, und wurde mit einer stehenden Ovation und einem schoenem Blumenstrauss begruesst. Mit Abschluss der Liederauffuehrung Ongama Mhlontlo’s wurde entschieden,nunmehr Champagner und das Buffet zu geniessen und Monthati Masebi waermstens zu begruessen und ihr die Waerme und Sicherheit eines sympathisierenden Publikums zu vermitteln. Es entwickelte sich eine grossartige Stimmung , es wurde entschieden, mit einem gekuerzten ersten Teil des Konzerts fortzufahren. Und dann verdiente sich Monthati Masebi ihren neuen Spitznamen: “ Die Unzerstoerbare “ und entschied, ihre Intermezzostuecke zu spielen. Stehende Ovationen und Jubel im Publikum. Sie spielte wunderbar, wie gar nicht beruehrt vom Raubueberfall; ihr Handspiel is sanft und praezise zugleich und wir koennen mit Sicherheit erwarten – sie ist gerade 27 Jahre jung – dasz hier ein unglaubliches Talent heranwaechst. Nachdem uebernahm wiederum Ongama Mhlontlo das Piano und wir erlebten “ Nina”, “ You never walk alone’, “Oh mio babbino caro” aus ‘ Gianni Schicchi’ und schlussendlich Tony’s Lied “ Somethings coming’ aus “ West Side Story”. Stehende Ovationen, viele Bravorufe und die volle Liebe und Sympathie eines wunderbaren Publikums belohnte die zwei Kuenstler, die unter diesen fordernden Umstaenden Grossartiges leisteten.
Es soll nicht unerwaehnt bleiben, dasz beide Kuenstler Mitglieder von Koenigshaeusern sind, er aus dem Xhosa Koenigshaus und sie aus dem Venda – eine kleine Nation ganz im Norden Suedafrikas siedelnd – Koenigshaus die auch in ihren musikalischen Aktivitaeten selbstbewusst zu ihren Traditionen stehen und pflegen. So soll es auch sein! Auch in Europa!
Alles in allem war es ein fantastisches Konzert und ein moralischer Sieg ueber die dunklen Maechte und Kraefte des Verbrechens. Lob und Anerkennung fuer SITTOPERA’s Harald Sitta und sein Team, die unter diesen Umstaenden kuehlen Kopf bewahrten und effizient agierten. Ebenfalls Lob und Anerkennung dem Team und dem Personal des Rand Club, die sehr professionell die organisatorische Arbeit von SITTOPERA unterstuetzten.
