Fruehlingskonzert des Johannesburger Philharmonischen Orchesters
Respighi.Mozart und Tschaikovsky
Joahnnesburg, Linder Auditorium, 5. November2026

Richtig so !

________________
2rd Springtime concert of the
Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra
Respighi ,Mozart and Tchaikovsky
Joahnnesburg, Linder Auditorium, 5th of November
A hot summer has set in early right her in Johannesburg, thhe pleasures of a swimming pool proof make themselves evident day by day and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the guidance of Jean-Claude Picard delighted us with their 2nd springtime concert. Please, no misunderstandings also in hot Africa the gentlemen of a renowned orchestra play in Black-Tie and the ladies great evening gowns. And also the audience in the ( nearly) sold out Linder Auditorium – modern architecture but best acoustics – was in a festive mood.
It is fine, that we could hear an orchestra piece by the late romantic composer Ottorini Respighi. He took composition lessons from Rimksij-Korsakov and was in his time very successful as conductor of his own , very glamorous sinfonic works. In his oevre “ The birds”, composed 1927, he worked around themes from Baroque composers in a suite of five parts. A colourful, resplendent piece of orchestral program music which was presented in a vivid and precise way by the JPO Orchestra A lot of well deserved applause.
Then the 4th violin concerto by Mozart. That concert in D major, K. 218, was composed by Mozart in 1775 in Salzburg. He seemed to have originally composed it for himself to play, but after leaving the Salzburg Court Orchestra, he changed and updated the concerto for the successor of his position in his orchestra, Antonio Brunetti, to play. The movements are Allegro, Andante amabile and Rondo. The first movement is nicknamed the “military” Mozart Concerto presenting military rhythms while the second movement consists of melodic lines. The third movement sounds joyful and full of fun. With Sungmin Cho the JPO Orchester was able to engage a very sympathetic and excellent violinist from South Korea. He appeared already as a 13 year old and absolved already a multitude of international appearances. According to my investigations unfortunately not yet in Vienna or Austria. May I recommend to think about engaging him for appearances in Austria ? One would not rue this. Jean-Claude Picard let the JPO Orchestra sound sensitive, with Mozart’s specific easiness ( which is in fact very difficult to achieve), so that Sungmin Chom was able to present his virtuous art of playing the violin; technically as emotionally con amore brilliantly and acoustically in a noble way . Really played in a moving way and accompanies by the JPO Orchestra in a sensitive way. Simply beautiful. Well deserved, strong applause and one standing ovation .Sungmin Cho politely said thank you by nobly playing one Bach suite.
Then a break in which the audience was also served well in a culinary way. For some guests a fine sushi-buffet with Champagne was served. Also the ‘ surroundings worked out well and obviously the management of the JPO Orchestra under the busy Bongani Tembe likes the audience enjoying a concert from top to toe. Right so!
Then the Swan-Lake suite by . We in South Africa are definitely not of the opinion – see also the program of the 4th concert – to punish dead Russian composers and living Russian musicians for this oh so evil, evil Putin. That is good and adequate.Tchaikovsky did form this concert suite from elements of his ballet but hesitated through his remaining live to publish it. Only after his death, in the year 1900 this oeuvre was presented to the public. Already the ballet is for dancers one of the most difficult and also this orchestra suite demands a lot from an orchestra. In general the score encompasses a lot of brass and various drums and also stronger strings. The score encompasses for example 4 horns , 2 cornets ), 2 trumpets , 3 trombones, tuba plus a lot of drums especially 3 timpani , a harp and double basses. Here good old Tchaikovsky realized himself musically in full and once again demanded all from an orchestra and its musicians. With is specific pathos, intensity, rhythm, and melodies, expressing themselves from pianissimo up to fortissimo this oeuvre must be presented both sensitive and powerful. How easy it would be to be just noisy, the brass would have plenty of opportunities to blunder and also wood, drums and strings ample opportunities to snap. With pleasure I may report that the concert was blameless and Jean-Claude Picard brilliantly was able to make the orchestra sound both sensitive and powerful. I may emphasize – pars pro toto – the lady beating the timpani in a both powerful and precise way and the elegantly playing (female) which was surrounded by one very mighty constituted orchestra. The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra appeared and proved itself to be a gorgeous body of musical sounds. With pleasure I will also report about the 3rd and 4th springtime concert.
One organizational remark: verbal announcements before and during the concert one could nearly not hear well. understand. To give the speakers a microphone appears to be advisable. Beside that also from an organizational point of view this evening was faultless. A ‘thank you ‘from the heart to all involved musically and in organization.
