EINE AUFBLÜHENDE STIMME IN DURBAN
SITTOPERA KONZERT MIT ASANDA NTULI, LYRISCHER SOPRAN – 27.JULI 2025
Durban besitzt an der Universitaet von Kwa-Zulu -Natal eine hervorragende Opernschule, ist die im subtropischen Natal gelegene schoene Hauptstadt dieser Provinz mit viel Gruenanlagen, schoenen Straenden, bestem Wetter und gibt es dort eine Vielzahl junger, vielversprechender Stimmen im Bereich der klassischen Musik und der Oper. Eine dieser talentierten Saenger, der lyrische Sopran Asanda Ntuli wandte sich vor einiger Zeit mutig an SITTOPERA und fragte an, ob man ein eigenes Konzert fuer Sie organisieren koennte. Gefragt, getan; nach einem gut verlaufenen Vorstellungsgespraech wurde ein Sonntagsmorgenkonzert vereinbart. Die Universitaet stellte den Theaterraum des Howard College – im Stile der ‘neuen Sachlichkeit’aber mit Jugenstilelementen sehr elegant gestalteten Gebaeude – gerne und grosszuegig zur Verfuegung und lokale Enthusiasten der klassischen Musik und der Oper begannen die Werbetrommel zu ruehren.
Asanda Ntuli , geboren in Durban, 23 Jahre jung, begann ihre Reise in die Welt der klassischen Musik als ein Mitglied des Kammerchors Durban und wurde dann ein mitglied des Afro Arts Chores. 2023 erwarb Sie den akademischen Grad des ‘’Bachelor of Arts’ von der Universitaet KwaZulu-Natal, und 2024 erwarb Sie von der Universitaet Kapstadt den Grad des ‘Bachelor of Music’; ein Doktoratsstudium is begonnen.
Somit stellten sich Asanda Ntuli und SITTOPERA das erste Mal der interessierten Musikoeffentlichkeit von Durban vor. Das Programm umfasste bekannte Lieder und Arien; eine sichere Bank. Aber man kann von einer jungen Saengerin nicht verlangen, dasz Sie bei Ihrem ersten Konzert das Publikum mit avantgardistischem und Unbekanntem konfrontiert. Asanda begann Ihren Vortrag mit zwei Liedern von Gabriel Faure, “Apres un reve”und Baudelaires Hymnus “A la tres chere..” aus den “Fleurs du mal”; es folgten Francesco Tosti’s “Malia”, “Ridonami ..”( ein Ave Maria) und “Sogno”.
Nach einer kurzen Pause begann der Konzertteil mit Opernarien. Zuerst aus ‘Cosi fan tutte’ Fiordiligis Arie “Come scoglio” und – interessant – gleich folgend Despina’s Aria “Una donne a quiendici anni” ( zwei grundverschiedene Charaktere) .Es folgte Laurettas “O mio babbino caro’aus “Gianni Schicchi” und zu guter Letzt die Arie der Susanne “De vieni non tardar’aus der ‘Hochzeit des Figaro’.
Als verdiente Zugabe sang Sie das schwunghafte neapolitanische Volkslied “Funiculi, funicula’ – wenn es die Drei Tenoere nicht verschmaeht haben zu singen, darf Sie das auch – als Duet mit Nonka Khumalo, einem jungen Tenor an der Opernschule als Ueberraschungsgast.
Asanda Ntuli ist eine sehr engagierte junge Saengerin mit grossem, ueberdurchschnittlichem Talent. Sie hat sich fuer Ihr erstes Solokonzert bestens vorbereitet und besitzte eine elegante, feine aber auch durchaus voluminoese lyrische Sopranstimme. Besonders gefallen haben mir Tosti’s “Ave Maria” und die zwei Arien aus “Cosi fan tutte”. Sowohl die ernsthafte, dramatischere Arie der Fiordiligi als auch die kokett-soubrettenhafte Arie der Despina hat sie souveraen bewaeltigt. Auch Koloraturpotential war an ihr zu bemerken das aber noch auszureifen ist. Auch im Spiel und Gestik ueberzeugt sie. Sie hat Buehnenpraesenz; sie ‘tritt auf’ . Natuerlich ist Sie noch eine junge Stimme, an dieser, sehr vielversprechenden, musz noch gearbeitet werden aber mit Lionel Mkhwanazi, dem Leiter der Opernschule als Gesangslehrer, ist Sie in sehr guten Haenden. Mit einem derartig vielversprechenden Talent kann weitere Schulung und Erfahrung Grosses bringen. Zierlich und apart, , aber sehr willensstark darf angenommen werden, dasz Sie mit etwas Glueck und Energie in sehr absehbarer Zeit eine ueberdurchschnittliche Position erreichen kann; sowohl im Reich der Lieder als auch in lyrischen Opernrollen vor allem des italienischen Faches aber auch Mozart. Auch Richard Strauss laege in Ihrem Bereich, eine Silberstimme – noch zu schulen- ist zu erkennen. Dr Andrew Warburton, der fuehrende Konzertpianist in Durban, begleitete einfuehlsam und erstklassig ; jeder junger Stimme ist ein derartiger Begleiter am Klavier zu wuenschen.
Auch der junge Tenor Nonka Khumalo bewaehrte sich in seinem kurzen Gastauftritt.
Harald Sitta als “”Master of Ceremonies” stellt kurz aber informativ die diversen Lieder und Arien vor. SITTOPERA ist zu danken, dasz sie den “Sprung’nach Durban wagten und begannen, dortige vielversprechende Stimmen in einem Konzert vorzustellen. An weiteren Konzerten besteht nach diesem sehr Gelungenen grosses Interesse.
Das zahlreich erschienene Publikum spendete starken, wohlverdienten Applaus und “Bravo’Rufe. Nach dem Konzert wurde die Saengerin von Familie, Freunden und dem gesamten Publikum charmant gefeiert.

A FLOURISHING VOICE IN DURBAN
A CONCERT BY SITTOPERA KONZERT WITH ASANDA NTULI, LYRIC SOPRANO – 27.JULI 2025
Durban possesses at the University of Kwa-Zulu -Natal a very fine Opera school, is the beautiful capital of the subtropical province of Natal with lots of trees and greens, fine beaches and very good and warm weather and there are a lot of young, promising voices in the realm of classical music and opera. One of those talented singers, the lyric soprano Asanda Ntuli approached courageously some time ago SITTOPERA and just asked, if they could organize a solo concert of her own for her. Asked and done; after a well going introductory meeting a Sunday morning concert was agreed on. With pleasure and magnanimously the university contributed the theatre of the Howard College – a very elegant building in the style of ‘new clarity’ but with art nouveau elements – and local enthusiasts for classical music and opera started to beat the drum.
Asanda Ntuli , a Durban-born singer,23 years young, began her journey in classical music as a member of the Durban chamber choir and later on became a member of the Afro Arts chorus. In 2023, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and in 2024, she earned her Bachelor of Music Honors degree from the University of Cape Town, a study for a Doctor’s degree is on the way.
And now Asanda Ntuli and SITTOPERA presented themselves for the first time to the interested public of Durban. The program contained well known art songs and arias, all save choices. But you cannot demand from a young singer that she confronts her audience at her first concert with avant-garde and unknown pieces. Asanda started her concert with two songs by Gabriel Faure, “Apres un reve”and Baudelaires hymnus “A la tres chere..” from the “Fleurs du mal”; followed by Francesco Tosti’s “Malia”, “Ridonami ..”( one ‘Hail Mary’) and “Sogno”.
After a short break the concerted entered the opera part. First from ‘Cosi fan tutte’ Fiordiligis aria i “Come scoglio” and – quite interesting- immediately following Despina’s aria “Una donne a quiendici anni” ( two definitely very different characters) She proceeded with Laurettas “O mio babbino caro’ from “Gianni Schicchi” and finally performed the aria of Susanne “De vieni non tardar’ from “ The marriage of Figaro”.
As a well deserved encore she did perform the vivid neapolitanian popular song “Funiculi, funicula’ – if the “Three tenors”had not been above performing this song she also may – as a duet with Nonka Khumalo, a young tenor from the opera school as a surprise guest.
Asanda Ntuli is one very committed young singer with a great, above average talent. She prepared herself very careful for her first solo concert and possesses an elegant, fine but also quite voluminous lyric soprano voice. I especially liked from her Tosti’s “Hail Mary ” and the two arias from “Cosi fan tutte”. Bothe the solemn, more dramatic aria of Fiordiligi as the capricious soubrette like aria of Despina she perfromed in a sovereign way. Also a potential for coloratura was to be heard which of course must be trained and schooled. She was also convincing in her play and gesticulation. She possesses stage presence, she ‘appears’. Naturally she is still a young voice, a very, very promising one but one must still work on her voice but with Lionel Mkhwanazi, the head of the opera School at the University as her vocal coach she is in very good hands. With such a very promising talent further schooling and coaching plus experience can bring great results. Graceful and elegant but very strong willed one may assume that with a piece of luck and energy she will reach within a reasonable time a position far above average; both in the realm of art songs and lyric opera roles mostly from Romantic Italian operas but also Mozart. Also Richard Strauss is within her reach, a silver voice – of course to be coached – is recognizably.Therefore, dear agents in the opera realm – if you should read this review – contact SITTOPERA harald@sittopera.co.za .
Dr Andrew Warburton, the leading concert pianist in Durban accompanied in a sensitive and excellent way. You may wish to every young voice to have such an accompanist on the paino.
Also the young tenor Nonka Khumalo proved himself in his short appearance.
Harald Sitta as MC introduced short but informative the various art songs and arias .SITTOPERA may be thanked that they dared to ‘jump’ to Durban and started to introduce, local, most promising voices in a concert. A great interest in further concerts developed after this well going one
The numerous audience gave well deserved strong applause and shouts of “Bravo”. After the concert the singer was in a most charming way celebrated by family friends and the audience.
