Groß und Klein machen sich auf die Suche nach dem Gral: Am 30. März 2025 beginnt die Ostersaison der Tiroler Festspiele Erl 2025 mit einem Familienkonzert. Das Thema des bei Kindern und Erwachsenen sehr beliebten Formats: Parsifal – genau wie in der „großen Oper“. Die Geschichte dieses jungen Helden wird mit Orchester und kleinen Überraschungen erzählt. Die australische Dirigentin Jennifer Condon leitet das Konzert musikalisch, und als Parsifal ist Tadeusz Szlenkier zu erleben. Durch den Vormittag führt der bekannte Moderator, Journalist und Schauspieler Maximilian Maier. – Und alle sind herzlich eingeladen, mitzuwirken.

Der Intendant wird zu Ostern selbst auf der Bühne stehen: Jonas Kaufmann verkörpert die Titelfigur in Richard Wagners Oper Parsifal, eine Partie, die er aus langjähriger Erfahrung bestens kennt. In Erl kennt sich auch der Regisseur der Opernproduktion, Philipp M. Krenn, gut aus, zumal seine Karriere hier als Regieassistent und Abendspielleiter begann. Chefdirigent Asher Fisch leitet diese Neuproduktion mit Chor und Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele Erl und erstklassigen weiteren Solist:innen: Brindley Sherratt (Gurnemanz), Irene Roberts (Kundry), Michael Nagy (Amfortas),Georg Nigl (Klingsor) und Clive Bayley (Titurel). Premiere ist am Gründonnerstag (17. April), die zweite Vorstellung am Ostersonntag (20. April).

Die große christliche Erzählung der Passionsgeschichte wird heuer zu Ostern in Erl aus zwei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet. Johann Sebastian Bach schildert sie in seiner Matthäus- Passion musikalisch überwältigend. Heinz Ferlesch, seines Zeichens Leiter der Wiener Singakademie, dirigiert dieses Konzert am Karfreitag (18. April) mit dem Chor und Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele Erl. Die Solopartien sind mit Annett Fritsch, Katrin Wundsam, Paul Schweinester, Daniel Gutmann, Lukas Enoch Lemcke und Charles Workman erstrangig besetzt.

Die Passionsspiele Erl haben mit Christian Kolonovits einen Star des Rock und Pop wie der Symphonik gleichermaßen eingeladen, eine neue Passionsmusik zu schreiben. Der Komponist hat eine an Filmmusik erinnernde „zweite Ebene“ zur Passionserzählung geschaffen, wie er vorab verrät.
Diese neue Erler Passionsmusik wird in einer Fassung für Orchester und Chor am Karsamstag (19. April) aus der Taufe gehoben – eine ideale Einstimmung auf die diesjährigen Passionsspiele. Anton Pfisterer, deren musikalischer Leiter, dirigiert das Konzert und Martin Leutgeb, der für den neuen Passionstext und die neue Inszenierung der Passionsspiele verantwortlich zeichnet, moderiert.

Seit vielen Jahren unterstützen die Tiroler Festspiele Erl die CONCORDIA-Sozialprojekte. Die Benefiz-Matinee am Palmsonntag (13. April), steht ganz im Zeichen dieses Projektes. Das Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele Erl spielt unter der Leitung seines Chefdirigenten Asher Fisch die Symphonie Nr. 44 von Joseph Haydn, die Symphonie Nr. 4 von Franz Schubert und ein spätromantisches Meisterwerk von Arnold Schönberg, Verklärte Nacht, in der Streichorchester-Fassung.

Der neuen „Doppelrolle“ von Jonas Kaufmann als Sänger und Intendant widmet der ORF- Radiosender Ö1 am 19. April 2025 eine Ausgabe der Live-Talk-Sendung Ö1 Klassik-Treffpunkt. Im Gespräch mit Gastgeberin Elke Tschaikner wird es nicht nur Gelegenheit geben, über Kaufmanns Karriereschritt als Intendant zu sprechen, sondern auch über das Eine oder Andere, was Sie über den Sänger, Familienvater, passionierten Heimwerker, Hobbykoch und Fußballfan vielleicht noch nicht wussten. Dazwischen gibt es Musik: Jonas Kaufmann bringt seine Lieblings-Aufnahmen mit.

Beide Opernvorstellungen Parsifal und die Matthäus-Passion sind ausverkauft. Für alle anderen Vorstellungen sind noch Karten erhältlich.

Giacomo Puccini’s Manon Lescaut at the State Opera Praha

Romantic love, or security? Life at the side of the wealthy Geronte would offer the beautiful Manon luxury but no passion. The opposite is true of a relationship with the poor knight Renato des Grieux. Manon must decide which path to take, but alas, she cannot, and this will prove fatal… The State Opera presents a new staging of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Manon Lescaut, directed by Sláva Daubnerová and with music orchestrated by conductor Simone Di Felice. The premieres will take place on 27 and 29 March 2025.

Director Sláva Daubnerová approaches Manon Lescaut as a story of determination and naive fantasies of a new life. Manon is attempting to break out of a vicious circle and escape to a better life using the only weapons she has – youth and beauty. “She wants to win, but in the world she inhabits she doesn’t stand a chance. She finds herself on the edge of a chasm between reality and illusion, and we bear witness to the struggle of her life,” states Daubnerová. According to her, at first glance it may look like Manon is taking advantage of the men around her, but in reality she herself is being exploited and abused. She is chasing after a fanciful myth which is foisted upon girls but is impossible to realise.

In the story of Manon, the image of the desert is an important element which inspired both Sláva Daubnerová and set designer Alexandre Corazzola. “Each act of the opera takes place in a different place. It ends in the desert in America, where Manon dies. This final, very surreal and poetic image became the inspiration for the entire scenographic concept. A desert, a lonely highway, and an endless horizon with the promise of something that lies beyond it. We decided to situate the entire plot of the opera in this environment. Manon is always on the road, on the run. She is the archetype of the ‘fallen woman’, but it is important to draw attention to the social context, to the circumstances under which she got into this life situation,” commented Daubnerová in an interview with the opera’s
dramaturge, Jitka Slavíková, for the production’s programme.

The opera Manon Lescaut, the plot of which is based on the French romance novel The Story of the Chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut by the Abbé Prévost, was Giacomo Puccini’s first big success. “When it premiered in Torino in 1893, it was an absolute hit with audiences and critics alike. The opera is full of beautiful melodies and raw emotions, from the passionate duet between Des Grieux and Manon in the second act to the crushing desolation of the final aria ‘Sola, perduta, abbandonata’,” says Jitka Slavíková.

What conductor Simone Di Felice admires about Manon Lescaut is the musical ingenuity, which reflects Puccini’s youth, his almost wild inner inventiveness. “The character of this opera is one of extreme passion, often in a desperate form, but it also contains unforgettable lyrical melodies and light, ironic passages. Despite this wealth of different qualities, the overall structure is very convincing and the dramaturgy is perfectly balanced and effective. The orchestration is incredibly mature and rich in a variety of timbres, from the most extreme to the boldly refined. This is a true masterpiece that Prague audiences should definitely not miss!” says Simone Di Felice. He adds: “We have a superb cast of soloists, a brilliant chorus, and an incredibly flexible and virtuosic orchestra,
which I have the pleasure of conducting for the first time. Sláva Daubnerová’s production displays extraordinary intelligence and psychological sophistication as well as great visual appeal.”

According to Per Boye Hansen, Artistic Director of the National Theatre Opera and the State Opera, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut is regarded as a key work in his development as a composer, but it has not been performed in Prague for a long time. “Manon Lescaut paints a powerful portrait of human cruelty, but Puccini’s beautiful music also imbues the characters with warmth and compassion.

Given her previous compelling work in Prague, it was only natural to ask Sláva Daubnerová to stage this ‘feminist’ opera,” says Hansen.
“The National Theatre has returned repeatedly to the story of Manon Lescaut through dance, opera, and dramatic theatre. Different renditions yield different interpretations. However, all of our creators are always inspired by this poetic subject matter, which hides our deepest passions and fears inside a bourgeois story,” says Jan Burian, Director General of the National Theatre.
The role of Manon will be played alternately by Petra Alvarez Šimková and Ghiulnara Raileanu, the knight Renato des Grieux by Peter Berger and Milen Bozhkov. Lukáš Bařák and Csaba Kotlár will sing the role of Manon’s brother Lescaut, and Geronte di Ravoir will be played by Jiří Sulženko and František Zahradníček.
