Lise Davidsens Zwillinge sind bereits gut in unserer Welt angekommen!

Lise Davidsen: My twins have arrived!
No words can describe how good it feels to have these beauties here with me. ♥️
I must send a huge thank you to the @fodebarsel_siv department at my local hospital. The nurses, midwives, doctors and carers were so patient, kind and helpful. They made me feel safe and brilliantly taken care of, before, during and after the births.
Now we are a family of four, so I will go back to my baby bubble for a while, before I return to singing.

A new chapter begins for the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago – Viareggio. The 71st edition opens under new governance, with renewed institutional partnerships and a clear artistic direction led by Angelo Taddeo, focused on the voice. From 18 July to 6 September 2025, five operas (ToscaLa bohèmeTurandotMadama Butterfly, and Manon Lescaut) will be staged over seventeen evenings (all performances at 9:15 p.m.), with some of the most celebrated singers of our time, gathered in a single programme to honour Puccini right where he lived and composed – next to the open-air theatre – in what he called «the peace of my soul»: his villa, today a museum managed by the Simonetta Puccini Foundation.

For the first time, the Festival also announces the titles of the 72nd edition in 2026, which will celebrate the centenary of Turandot. The season will open on 17 July with a new production of Turandot (with further performances on 24 July, 1, 20, and 28 August), followed by Tosca (18 and 31 July, 8 and 21 August), La bohème (26 July, 6 and 27 August), Madama Butterfly (7 and 22 August, 4 September), and La fanciulla del West (29 August and 5 September). Two rarely-performed operas inspired by the same story will also be staged: Turanda by Antonio Bazzini (1867) in the Park of Music on 4 July, and Turandot by Ferruccio Busoni (1917) at the Auditorium Caruso on 11 July. A special opera gala is scheduled for 22 July.

President Fabrizio Miracolo states:
„The 2025 edition marks a new beginning for us. We have worked with determination over the past months to restore the Festival’s role at the heart of the international opera scene, guided by a simple yet essential principle: Everything begins here. In Torre del Lago, Puccini’s beloved place, where he lived and composed, and where this summer his music will resonate once more through the voices of the world’s finest opera singers. This relaunch has been made possible through renewed cooperation among local institutions – the Tuscany Region, the City of Viareggio, the Simonetta Puccini Foundation – alongside the Ministry of Culture and key cultural and economic partners such as the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca and other regional sponsors. We have also worked to strengthen our ties with the local community of Torre del Lago, a place that preserves the memory of the composer and deserves structured development. A special thanks goes to Mayor Giorgio Del Ghingaro, who has strongly supported the revitalization process and the transformation of the theatre’s surroundings into a place of cultural excellence. This 71st edition is the result of the artistic vision of Angelo Taddeo, who, in just a few months, has managed to restore focus on vocal artistry, great performers, and musical quality.. We have built a prestigious line-up featuring some of the most acclaimed artists in today’s operatic world. It is only the beginning. Our goal is to create a Festival that remains true to Puccini while, like him, looking ahead. And for the first time in recent history, before the current season even begins, we are already announcing the next edition – a sign of operational efficiency and forward-looking planning aligned with international standards.“

Artistic Director Angelo Taddeo adds:
« 2025 marks a new artistic phase for the Puccini Festival, and we are proud to welcome some of the finest international voices who will interpret Puccini’s music in the very place it was imagined and written: Torre del Lago. Among the leading artists are Maria Agresta, Anna Netrebko, Aleksandra Kurzak, Eleonora Buratto, Rosa Feola, Roberto Alagna, Gregory Kunde, Yusif Eyvazov, Vittorio Grigolo, Francesco Meli, and many others. After 70 editions, our ambition is to reposition the Festival as a national and international reference point. We are focusing on vocal excellence, Puccini’s identity, and the strength of casting. The only new production this year is Tosca, staged by Alfonso Signorini. But our eyes are already on 2026, with a new staging of Turandot and two rare adaptations – Turanda by Bazzini and Turandot by Busoni – which reflect the Festival’s renewed voice and vision».

A highly anticipated guest of the 2025 programme is undoubtedly soprano Anna Netrebko, who received the Puccini Prize – the highest honour of the City of Viareggio and the Puccini Festival Foundation – on 20 December. She will be the star of a gala on 13 August, alongside tenor Martin Mühle and baritone Jérôme Boutillier, under the baton of Michelangelo Mazza and with the Puccini Festival Orchestra. The concert programme is divided into two parts: the first includes selections by Giuseppe Verdi from Aida, Macbeth, Don Carlo, and Il trovatore; the second focuses naturally on Puccini, with pages from Le Villi, Tosca, Edgar, and Madama Butterfly.

Audiences coming to Torre del Lago this year will notice significant changes and a new level of hospitality. In recent years, the area surrounding the open-air Gran Teatro and the entire urban environment of Torre del Lago have undergone major redevelopment, promoted by the Mayor of Viareggio, Giorgio Del Ghingaro. The project specifically involved improvements to public decor, road systems, lighting, and public spaces, with special attention given to the Belvedere on Lake Massaciuccoli, now transformed into a pedestrian space of great charm adjacent to the theatre and the Parco della Musica e della Scultura. These interventions restore both landscape dignity and functionality to a place deeply connected to Puccini’s life, enhancing its cultural and touristic value, and returning it to the community and to Festival audiences.

The 71st Festival opens on Friday 18 July 2025 with Tosca (additional performances on 1, 9, and 29 August). Set in Rome and based on the play by Victorien Sardou, the opera premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 14 January 1900. In Torre del Lago, it will be presented in a new production directed and costumed by Alfonso Signorini, with sets by Juan Guillermo Nova and lighting by Valerio Alfieri. Musical direction is entrusted to Giorgio Croci. Four renowned sopranos will alternate in the title role: Aleksandra Kurzak (18/07), Eleonora Buratto (01/08), Carmen Giannattasio (09/08), and Valentina Boi (29/08). The role of Mario Cavaradossi will be performed by Roberto Alagna (18/07), Michael Fabiano (01/08), Jonathan Tetelman (09/08), and Francesco Meli (29/08), while Baron Scarpia will be sung by Luca Salsi (18/07), Mikołaj Zalasiński (01 and 09/08), and Ivan Inverardi (29/08). The cast also includes Luciano Leoni (Angelotti), Carlo Ottino (Il Sagrestano), Francesco Napoleoni (Spoletta), Paolo Pecchioli (Sciarrone), Omar Cepparolli (Un carceriere) e Francesca Presepi (Un pastore). Orchestra, Chorus, and Children’s Chorus of the Puccini Festival (Chorus Master: Marco Faelli and Viviana Apicella).

On Saturday 19 July La bohème makes its debut (repeated on 26 July and 7 August). Based on Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger, the opera was first performed at the Teatro Regio in Turin on 1 February 1896. The Festival reprises its own acclaimed 2014 production, directed by Ettore Scola and revived in 2025 by Marco Scola Di Mambro, with sets by Luciano Ricceri, costumes by Cristiana Da Rold, and lighting by Valerio Alfieri. The famous film director crafted a stage narrative rich in cinematic imagery, transforming the scene into a sort of “living film” depicting a historic Paris teeming with artists and bohemians. The scenery precisely evokes painter’s studios and late 19th-century cafés, with an intimate, emotionally charged atmosphere. The production has been enthusiastically received in previous seasons, consistently praised for its expressive clarity. Conductor: Pier Giorgio Morandi. Rodolfo will be sung by Vittorio Grigolo (19 and 26/07) and Carlo Raffaelli (07/08), Mimì by Nino Machaidze (19 and 26/07) and Maria Novella Malfatti (07/08). Vittorio Prato will sing Marcello, while Musetta will be interpreted by Sara Blanch (19/07), Ilina Mihaylova (26/07), and Claudia Belluomini (07/08). The cast also includes Italo Proferisce (Schaunard), Antonio Di Matteo (Colline), Claudio Ottino (Benoît), Matteo Mollica (Alcindoro), Francesco Napoleoni (Parpignol), Francesco Auriemma (Sergente dei doganieri), Simone Simoni (Doganiere).

The second weekend of the Festival opens on Friday 25 July with Turandot (further performances on 2, 14, 22 August and 5 September). Puccini’s final opera, left incomplete, is presented in the completion by Franco Alfano. The 2017 production returns to the stage, directed by Alfonso Signorini – then making his opera debut – with sets by Carla Tolomeo and costumes by Fausto Puglisi. The staging is lavish and visionary, blending exoticism and glamour in an imaginary, sumptuous, symbolic China dominated by bold colours, golden accents, lacquer red, oriental motifs, and nocturnal scenes. Musical direction is entrusted to Renato Palumbo. Turandot – portrayed as a ghostly queen suspended between cruelty and seduction, coldness and passion – will be interpreted by Anna Pirozzi (25/07), Olga Maslova (02 and 14/08), and Ann Mills Courtney (22/08 and 05/09). Calaf will be sung by Gregory Kunde (25/07 and 02/08), Dario Di Vietri (14/08), and Yusif Eyvazov (22/08 and 05/09). Liù will be portrayed by Carolina López Moreno (25/07 and 22/08), Rosa Feola (2/08), Alina Tkachuk (14/08), and Elisa Balbo (05/09); Timur by Michele Pertusi (25/07 and 02/08) and Andrea De Campo (14, 22/08, and 05/09). he cast is completed by Massimiliano Pisapia (Altoum), Sergio Vitale (Ping on 25/07, 02/08, 14/08) and Stefano Marchisio (Ping on 22/08 and 05/09), Andrea Tanzillo (Pang), Tiziano Barontini (Pong), Luca Dall’Amico (Un mandarino), Andrea Volpini (Il principino di Persia), Irene Celle e Maria Salvini (Ancelle).

On Friday 8 August and Saturday 23 August, Madama Butterfly returns to the stage. Premiered at Teatro alla Scala on 17 February 1904, this opera in two acts is based on the Japanese tragedy by David Belasco and the story by John Luther Long. The Festival presents its own 2020 production, staged by Manu Lalli – who also designed the sets and costumes – with lighting by Valerio Alfieri. Drawing inspiration from Japanese theatre and visual culture, the direction reimagines the drama with stylized, almost symbolic scenes, evoking calligraphic lines and essential gestures, offering a poignant and contemporary reading. The role of Cio-Cio-San is entrusted to Maria Agresta, with Vincenzo Costanzo as Pinkerton, Luca Micheletti as Sharpless, and Chiara Mogini as Suzuki. Completing the cast: Nicola Pamio (Goro), Manuel Pierattelli (Prince Yamadori), Andrea Tabili (Bonzo), Francesco Auriemma (Yakusidé), Roberto Rabasco (Il commissario imperiale), Francesco Lombardi (L’ufficiale del registro), Maria Salvini (La madre), Claudia Belluomini (La zia), Irene Celle (La cugina).

The opera season concludes on Saturday 30 August and Saturday 6 September with Manon Lescaut. Based on Histoire du chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost, the opera premiered at Teatro Regio in Turin on 1 February 1893. The production revives the historic 2002 staging by the sculptor Igor Mitoraj, with his monumental sculptural sets and stylized, powerful costumes. Direction is by Daniele De Plano, with scenic elements restaged by Luca Pizzi and costumes adapted by Cristina Da Rold. Lighting is by Valerio Alfieri. Musical direction is entrusted to Valerio Galli. Maria José Siri stars in the title role, alongside Luciano Ganci (Des Grieux), Claudio Sgura (Lescaut), and Giacomo Prestia (Geronte). The cast is completed by Paolo Antognetti (Edmondo), Matteo Mollica (L’oste), Alessandra Della Croce (Un musico), Nicola Pamio (Il maestro di ballo), Manuel Pierattelli (Un lampionaio), Roberto Rabasco (Sergente degli arcieri), Omar Cepparolli (Il comandante di marina).

All productions feature the involvement of the Orchestra, Chorus, and, where applicable, the Children’s Chorus of the Puccini Festival, conducted by chorus master Marco Faelli and, for the children’s chorus, Viviana Apicella.

The festival is enriched by an off-programme section that includes concerts and performances related to the composer’s musical world or in some ways related to it: it begins on 13 July with a version of the one-act opera Suor Angelica, staged in the Mitoraj space of the Gran Teatro’s Parco della Musica, directed by Davide Garattini Raimondi and conducted by Sirio Scacchetti.
Many composers of film music in the 20th century drew inspiration from Puccini. Among them, Ennio Morricone achieved fame and thematic impact on par with the maestro. He is honoured in the tribute concert Morricone Story on 24 July, featuring renowned interpreters of his film scores such as soprano Susanna Rigacci and trumpeter Nello Salza, known as “the trumpet of Italian cinema,” performing pieces from The MissionThe Sicilian ClanCinema ParadisoThe Legend of 1900For a Fistful of Dollars, and Once Upon a Time in America.
At the Auditorium Caruso, on 11 August, the spotlight shifts to dance with Giacomo Puccini, oltre il tempo by Emox Ballet, choreographed and directed by Beatrice Paoleschi, who crafts a portrait of Puccini highlighting his modernity and relevance through contemporary and urban dance. The lead dancer is Francesco Mariottini, also known for his appearance on the television show Amici, and the performance will feature actor Andrea Buscemi.
Also at the Auditorium, on 27 July and 16 August, two piano recitals are scheduled: the first with the winner of the Massarosa International Piano Competition, and the second titled Puccini’s Piano, featuring pianist Luigi Traino and actress Marilena Cheli.
There will also be a series of Concerts at Villa Paolina — the former residence in Viareggio of Napoleon’s sister — hosting chamber music events on 3, 12, and 31 July and 21 August, dedicated respectively to the music of Vincenzo Bellini, Giovanni Pacini, Johann Strauss II, and Pietro Mascagni.

The 71st Puccini Festival 2025 Torre del Lago – Viareggio is produced by the Fondazione Festival Pucciniano with the support of the City of Viareggio, the Tuscany Region, and the Ministry of Culture. amiens

Prenez vite vos places !

 Avec toutes mes amitiés,

Jean Rossier
